I would reccomend you buy a new laptop. what's the point of paying to ship your current laptop and your desktop? plus shipping do here is a lil pricy. with 2 computers there is more comfusion. you start working on a document on your desktop and had to rush to school with your laptop but forgot to save it to your flash drive of laptop then you get stuck.

I'm assuming you're somewhat knowledgeable with computers... so what I would do it disassemble all the boards (mb, vid card, HDs, any other PCI things) and put them in a static bag then put soft foam or a towel around them. Then put them INSIDE the case, so that way you're not wasting space, and they'll be safe.

One time I was just driving with my tower in the trunk, and the video card dislodged by the normal bumps on the road - and you're talking about shipping this beast on a boat. If you don't take out your components I'd be surprised if nothing broke where the boards plug into the PCI slots. My opinion, anyway...

I gave my monster desktop to my dad to keep since I realized a long time ago that it would be a headache to get this behemoth down here. Plus my Macbook Pro does everything my desktop does and more...

My 22'' monitor is definitely something I wanted to really bring with me but I am gonna have to bite my lip and wait till i get down there for one

You can consider purchasing a Shuttle and building it with the latest processors for abour $400. They are small and very easy to pack. Another alternative is the Asus EEE B202 desktop. It was recently released (last week) and sells for about $350. It is the size of a Wii so that is even easier to carry. Just run a search for these items.

Still there is no easy and safe way to transport your LCD.

Several people mention the electricity; do you mean power outtages? Do surge suppressors protect other electronic devices, like laptops and clocks?

the thing is, in the dorms for example the frequency of the power coming out of the generator is higher than the usual 60 Hz I believe. this will cause your alarm clocks to run fast and wreak havoc with sensitive electronics......i guess a surge protector is better than nothing but its no guarantee

Other than that, If you take the monitor to a UPS or FedEx store, they will package it for you and they can ship it. It will cost you a little, but they do an excellent packing job. I brought my 23", but I just packed it in my car and shipped that.
How much did it cost to ship the car?
