Internet speed

How is the internet connection in the dorms / apartments / on campus (wireless?)? Is it fast enough to do video conferencing on Skype?

On campus, you'll be using NETstar, which sucks a big one, in a big way. As of last semester, there was no wireless in the dorms, although it was promised to us. Likely, you guys won't have wireless internet in the dorms either (unless, of course, you have your own wireless router). NETstar, both on campus and in the dorms, is highly variable. Sometimes it is plenty fast for video calls, and other times it is to slow for even voice calls. More often than not though, it's fast enough for Skype. NETstar throttles bandwidth, but fortunately, Skype is one of the programs they allow to work without hindrance.

In general, the campus internet runs around the same speed as a fast dial-up connection. Sometimes, it slows to an absolute crawl, and less frequently, it's actually a decent broadband speed.

I was able to run skype with reasonable ease using the school's internet (I did not have internet at my house). In the end; however, I found the callback number with my chippie phone more convenient than skype.

If your in the dorms youll have to get NetStar. (sign up during registration at their table or look for a flyer on campus with details) They really don't care about speed too much, its pretty hit or miss. During the day the connection is pretty norm-to-slow while at night it seems to speed up a bit.

When you move out get Caribserve which is about 512Kbs/sec PEAK with about 128-256K/sec is the average and also depends on the time of day. Caribserve is touted as great by most people.

You don't sign up for NETstar anymore. Everyone in the dorms has it and its included in the housing fee
