    I need to visit first

The more I look at how things operate and the more questions I have about island life and what to expect, the best thing to do is use my miles and travel to St. Martin before the Jan. class begins.

Any recommendations as to what I need to accomplish in the 3 days or so I plan on being there? I plan on coming during the week so everything should be open...

During orientation the prosecutor and police chief said that students no longer need to obtain a sxm drivers license.

It was probably to much work...having to file papers and all.

Could you even imagine the line at the DMV here!!

Probably a lot like the line to get plates!!! There were 7 people ahead of me, and it took them every bit of 45 minutes to get to me.

Well, I mean really, how many students actually got an SXM driver's license? Either that or they need to boost revenues and plan on setting up road blocks very soon and telling you that you NEED an SM driver's license.

They usually occur in Feb and Mar when everyone is suppose to have new license plates by then. They sit between Maho and the school and bust people. There can also be road blocks right before elections. The politicians like to say their doing things for the island and get the police to do road blocks to "enfore laws". Other than that, I don't think I have heard of any road checks any other time.

    anything else?

i visited last october before i started in january. I basically used it as a guide to compare this school with the other medical schools in the caribbean.

    1. If you don't plan on living on campus (which i highly recommend for your first semester)...then yes, finding a place off campus is advisable.
    2. looking for a car....can be done when you get here (or through valuemd)
    3. don't need a SXM license
    4. you'll need a physical address here on the island and a letter from the school stating that you're enrolled to open a bank of scotia account.

basically if you do come...explore the island (you won't have much time to do that). Find out where you need to go to buy basic necessities such as food and supplies.
