1) Typically when is the earliest that 1st years can move into the dorms? I'm wondering about this as my parents recently moved back to India and gave our home for rent. So I've sort of got no place to stay unless I keep staying in my current apartment at college. Which is not impossible but just quite expensive since I'll have to do a month-by-month deal.
You can move in about a week early.

2) I know people say it's good to stay a semester or two in the dorms to get to know people, but after 4 years of having a roommate during my undergraduate education, I would really like to have a single apartment. And this sort of arrangement is usually difficult to get in the dorms? And so is it easy/recommended for a Freshman to arrange off-campus living?
There are a lot of single rooms, although I'm not sure it's half. However, even if half the rooms were singles, twice the amount of people would be living in doubles. Most people I know that wanted a single in the last fall class got them. Make sure you get your housing contract in as quickly as possible...like fill it out the day it comes and overnight it back. But, like someone said above, you have your own bedroom/bathroom in the doubles.

3) I saw a post in the classifieds of a guy who owned a boat. I've lived outside the US before and frankly the idea of driving anywhere but the US is somewhat frightening to me (driving in India *shudder*). Is having a boat a viable form of Island transportation for, say, groceries? And as a former swimmer/lover of water the idea of having a boat just sounded incredibly cool to me although I'm probably just being naive. Say it ain't so!
There is at least one person, probably more, who gets around entirely by boat. You could dock close to school and there is a grocery store in Simpson Bay that is right next to a dock. It's not gonna get you to Cost-u-Less or Grande Marche, but you could find other ways if you had to go there. Would I do it? No. But has it been done? Yes.

wait...what. i still dunno if i have sent my housing stuff in. I thought they didnt start assigning anything until mid july? Actually, is the housing stuff just the one sheet of paper that comes with the welcome packet, because I sent that in a while ago. The only thing that my advisor said I was missing is the police report and immunity stuff.

AUC is really not very clear on this...so let me clear it up for you...

Originally, with the welcome packet, they will send you a housing form. On this form, you list your preference for a single or double room, as well as a few other rooming preferences (smoker/non-smoker, etc.). However, this form in no way guarantees you housing on campus. It simply indicates your desire to live on campus.

As it gets closer to the semester and after they have all of your required documents in, they'll send you a housing contract (you would not have received this yet for the fall semester). This is the form which you need to send back as quickly as possible to guarantee housing. You need to sign this contract, and include the housing deposit fee. If possible (especially for the fall semester when the dorm typically fills up), fill this form out, include a check, and overnight it back to MEAS the day you get it. This will give you the best chances of getting the room you want. Rooms are given, based on receipt of this contract AND the housing deposit, on a first come first served basis.

Is it "safe" for me to do my SGU interview and wait for their decision before making the next move at AUC? I haven't gotten my packet yet so I'm not sure what my deadline is; how far has the deadline been for others from the day they got their call?

Although, I have to say, I'm quite happy and grateful right now. Feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders...only to have another one put right back on. Bring it on.
Exact same boat as you!! I have my SGU interview tomorrow, but we'll see how that goes. From the forums on SGU, it looks like their class is full as well ..... Good luck to you - keep me posted!

Yeah, the more I read about it, the less confident I feel. All I see in the last few pages of the SGU thread are the words "full, waitlisted, GSP, Jan 09, etc."

Gonna fax in my AUC deposit tomorrow, anyway and see how things pan out.

I was wondering why we go for two years straight at AUC. Most other med schools that I have looked at, including DO schools that take additional OMM classes, give summers off for the first two years of school. Are we taking extra courses at AUC that require us to go during our summer vacation?

Very good question. I don't see any good reason that we need to go for 5 semesters. The 5th semester is mostly just Step I review though. Unfortunately, AUC has extended the curriculum out a little to accommodate people who weren't doing well getting it all done in 4 semesters. Even SGU has summer break. We're not taking anything extra, except mandatory review courses.

Found out today that my file's complete. Anyone have any guesses how soon I might here back with a decision?
Are there still any spaces in the class?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks

I am not sure about whether or not there is still room in the class. My guess would be that there still is.

As for how long, if you found out that your file is complete via snail mail, it should say on the letter an expected date when the decision is relayed to you. Mine said "within 4-5 weeks" and I got my response after about 3.5 weeks.

Good luck!
