    Dissection Kits

Just a note...I was going to add to my newbie info pm that I think everyone should know about, as far as dissection kits go. Our class was advised not to bother getting them. There were enough leftover tools under the tables in the lab and plus note service had kits for $35. Well, they cleared out all the tools under the tables and the kits in note service are very basic. It is now only half way through and everything in the kits are dull. Some people in class brought good tools and I advise doing the same (as my hand cramps up again as I cut thru yet another nerve.) Maybe some of the TA's on here (Jon, Rich, etc) could advise exactly which tools are worth bringing along. If you have the extra cash for some of these its going to be well worth it.

Dunno if I'd do that...the only way to separate the TAs from the students is by the fancy tools they have! But seriously, when I took anatomy, I used a kit I got at a site called indigo.com where they had some fairly decent kits for about $30 or so....it had a various scissors, scalpel handle, blades, teasing probe, stylus, eyedropper (?), and a cheesy "magnifying" card and worthless ruler. It came in a handy cloth roll-out bag which organizes your tools, but more importantly, really impresses fellow students. To be honest, I got through just fine with the small iris scissors for fine dissection, the heavy blunt/sharp scissors and scalpel for all the rest, and a decent pair of pick-ups and a metal probe to point at things with. Now I do everything with a pair of 9" blunt/blunt metzenbaum operating scissors and angled pick-ups...seems to work for me!

    things you need

1)hemostats bring three or four different sizes they really help you hold things in place or do blunt dissection which is hard with scissors since you cut and scratch a lot of stuff off
    2)scissors 1 pair
    3)forceps
4)scalpels bring a big one for the skin and hard structures and a small one for finer cutting
5)"T" pins they would come in handy holding things out of the way
