That is an interesting statement, however, how do you qualify those who are US citizens/Green card holders who attend non-US schools?!

I don't know if they'd need a visa or not...i'd assume they don't.

I think that US citizens should all get residency before non-US citizens, but I doubt anything like that would ever happen.

I agree with you on that statement. I'm just wondering if there is going to be anything found on paper that will say this or if residencies will officially take this on. I don't see it happening because it isn't politically correct.

More importantly, what were the USMLE averages of AUC grads who matched into Pediatrics and Family Practice? That would seem to be the most relevant information. I think IMGs who are US Citizens have a slightly higher match rate than those who are non citizens. But from what I heard, AUC and grads of the other top 4 Caribbean schools usually do much better than average in getting a residency, assuming they complete the program and pass the boards.

You don't have to go by what you heard, most of this stuff is published on the nrmp website. It varies by year, but US-citizen IMG's vs. non-citizen IMG's do about the same every year, both matching about 50%. Pretty sad actually.

I do realize now that Independents (IMG/FMG/DO/ETC) exist to fill the slots that US grads do not take. 93% of all US meds match. The remaining spots are filled by various independents, such as AUC/FMG/ABC. 50% of independents do not match.

Whats the deal with the 50% who dont match? Are they qualified? Or Were they the bottom of the class? barely pass the boards?

A lot more than 50% of AUC grads match though!

I am currently rotating with a bunch of foreign (India, Iran, Paki, Phillipines, Western Europe) interns (all with advanced residenies or categorical) with in my IM rotation, and I can say with no hesitation even with difficult accents and bad english and visa problems that I would much prefer one of them as my doctor than some of the people I saw at AUC.

And I'm sure I'm not the only person who thinks this, including the various program directors across the country. You'd be pretty annoyed if you had to pass on the Asian with 99s and 4 years of previous clinical experience and pubs for the St. Matthews guy with 75s and a 2.0 gpa, just because he was American. Just sayin'.

The long-term solution is, of course, to have more spots in US med schools. (Not that this will ever happen...)

Sad to say that I agree with this statement, which is why I think AUC should begin interviewing everyone, like the rest of the reputable schools. At least add in one more layer to the admissions process.

It would prevent a lot of the personality disorders from getting in for sure.
