I know this has been discussed before, but just to reiterate...
I did some more research on skype vs vonage. Seems that the service with Skype that allows you have a local US telephone number is only like $80/year... vs $30 per month or so with vonage! I was wondering how many AUC students use this Skype service with a skype-ready phone and how good the call quality is on SXM with skype.....

Does the 80 per year plan allow voicemail/answering service of some sort? I do not plan on being with my laptop all the time, but having some sort of message retrieval method would be nice Don't hesitate to post your conclusion on skype vs. vonage research

The membership below the pro level gives you the option of buying a US number for $60/year. As for the WiFi phones, I've used them while abroad in Asia, and they were great for me to call/recieve 'local' calls from the States. The problem was that I had to buy a specific Wi-Fi (VOIP) phone -- which was about $200 about two years ago. Also the quality of the connection depends on how fast ur internet is, during peak hours in Korea where everyone's online, I could definitely notice and echo/delay when talking to someone from the states. I'd love to hear an SMXer's opinion on this since I guess dormitory internet is pretty bad
