    Starting this August...Do we get summers off???

    Hey guys,

    Just wondering what the calendar situation is. When are finals for the 2nd semester? What are the typical summer break dates if any?

    Thanks a lot!

    SGU has two semesters per year; January and September. Like LCME medical schools, there is a 1-2 month summer break to relax or do research. SGU is a real university serving the Caribbean, so it has a more traditional structure.
    That's a lazy answer.

    Kindly explain what having 2 vs. 3 semesters per year has to do with the quality of education, or being a "real university"? Under university in the dictionary, I saw nothing about having 2 semesters per year. G

    I should have been clearer.

    "Real" = non-profit

    Caribbean = for profit

    The Carib schools make more money with 3 semesters, whereas non-profit have no such motivation.

    So where do private universities fall under then? I thought they were looking to make bucks?

    don't make the mistake in thinking that the bottom line isn't of relavance to "non-profits" - they need to make enough money to operate - if they don't they too have to answer for it.

    After all if money wasn't an issue- then US schools wouldn't have to charge tuition (as much as 50K a year) now would they?? (and they certainly wouldn't have to INCREASE tuition- and trust me they do!).

    The point I was making was that the primary concern for non-profit schools is education and research. Whereas, Carib schools focus on the bottom line and adjust the education accordingly.

    so what you are saying is that SGU is non-profit? now thats good comedy. just like saba is set up as non-profit but as anyone can guess all their profits go to bonuses for the board of trustees and owners so. private med schools in the us may not be able to show a profit on paper but rest assured their board is well taken care of.

    I know that you are being facetious (because no one is this dumb).

    What point are you trying to make here (besides trying to mess with me)?
