Hey NewHope
I don't think that should be much of an issue because all of AUC's core rotations have to be greenbook, whereas DO schools, at least the ones in NY, do there cores at non-greenbook hospitals. Furthermore, several hospitals in NY have an obligation to take a certain number of AUC students every year. According to Caritas Healthcare(St. John's Hospital on Queens Blvd., and Mary Immaculate in Jamaica) they are obligated to take 50 AUC students every year, and the same for Wycoff. (At least that's what their reps said at the symposium down here this past Tuesday.)
I too am from NYC (Queens), so it was important for me to be to go back to NY to do my rotations

no, because, at least at sgu, our spots are with ACGME accredited programs, so DO won't take those spots- simple as that- DO students rotate at AOA approved programs- they are not the same alloted spots.

Same here. Why would want to go to a place that is known to be expensive, rude and exclusionary? It is an amazing place to visit, with a great energy, but there is no time during rotations to play tourist anyway.

In response to the OP; I would imagine that you are motivated to work hard and finish on time. That would mean that if you started in January, then you would be able to finish with the September 2007 class and go through the match with them.

One thing that Scott1981 mentioned is important, though. If anything gets delayed then you will be delayed until the 2012 match and you will be losing the the advantage of AUC over DO school in 2008. if you are ready to take that risk, then go to AUC.

Well, I can't say that I want to "go there so bad", but for now we live here. Moving the family will require a lot more efforts than warranted at this point. But in the future we'll hit the road as well. NY is one of the worst, and relatavely low-paying States as far as practicing medicine. But we have quite an affordable for now housing, so for the time of school it's actually better to stay in NY.

Thanks everyone for your responses. It looks like D.O will be a much safer bet for me. The risk of doing everything kind of rushed is not worth it.

I have a good friend that went D.O. at Oklahoma State. She's in residency now, and the only thing she regrets is not going to a top 3 carib school when she had the chance.

Of course, she ended up in FP, so I imagine she just thinks the grass would have been greener had she done anything else.

I have an upper classman buddy (ex-Rossie) who has the exact regreat, only in reverse. He's done with ROSS (GPA=4.0, Step1=98, step2=94), got one interview for Ortho, while his buddies from NYCOM and LECOM (PA) all managed to get D.O Ortho spots. Go figure. But my guess that the O.P is right about things being more difficult in the future due to D.O schools expansion.

d.o.

I would do the d.o. over AUC if you already are accepted. AUC is more expensive than D.O. schools.

I didn't apply to D.O. schools b/c I wanted to be an M.D., but if I had then I would have probably choosen D.O. as a 'safer' economic choice.
