Took some med school pre-reqs from community college, maintained 4.0 with full-time course load and full-time job.
Took remainder of pre-reqs at 2 universities, part-time course load, and have a total of 3 **, the rest all As. The ** were all in science pre-reqs though. That gives me a total gpa of about 3.8.
Have shadowing and hospital paid work and volunteer experience.
Made 23O on MCAT last August, am scheduled to retake in July this summer. Applied to local state MD school and was rejected w/o interview.
I am a little older than traditional student and married with children.
So what do ya think? Thanks!
The statistics you have mentioned are acceptable. AUC does not discriminate because of age so your being older with kids will not be a factor and at our graduation ceremony last month one of those former students getting his MD degree was 52 y.o.
My only concern is what you have not mentioned in your background that might influence our decision. But on the face of it your academic credentials are OK.

I wouldn't say I have anything incriminating in my background, I am just not stellar in any way these days. I graduated with a 4.67 as co-valedictorian from highschool with several AP credits to my name. I then took about 2 years to start college, and when I did I earned an AS in Bus Admin from the local junior college. Got a 4.0 there and went to school and worked full-time with a child. Worked for a Fortune 7 company for a few years while I completed and after my ** in Info Technology. Again, 4.0 and full-time school and job with family. I got my ** from an online school. I worked for same company in a new role for 1.5 yrs more and then moved and quit to go to school for med school pre-reqs. Took 1 semester at community college and then worked full-time real estate and only went part-time the remaining semesters at major university in the state and took 2 more pre-reqs at another, closer university. Got a few ** this time around....So those are my concerns: I didn't go to any great schools, have some gaps in my education time line, had a career change, and instead of doing better post-bacc, I got ** at the university level.

Thanks for your reply!

flesheater: From what you've said, it sounds like you'll probably be fine. I wouldn't worry too much! Your GPA is very good for AUC and your MCAT is around the average. AUC also accepts plenty non-traditional (older) students.

If you get the MCAT you're hoping for...you'd be foolish to go to the Carribean! However, you'd have a very good chance of acceptance, unless there's something else screwed up in your app.

Hi, I'm a postbaccalaureate student at San Francisco State University and I'm wondering if AUC considers the postbacc GPA as part of the undergraduate GPA or as separate.

Postbacc cGPA (1.5 yrs. worth) : 3.96
Undergrad cGPA (4.5 yrs worth): 2.54
Combined GPA (postbacc and undergrad) : 2.90
MCAT: 24
Extracurricular:
  1. Research at UCSF for 2 years, and an author of the upcoming published research paper
  2. Health volunteer for American Lung Association for 1.5 yrs
  3. Youth group leader/mentor/private tutor/piano instructor for 4 yrs.
  4. Volunteer at a local free clinic for 7 months
  5. Served as an officer for various student organizations as an undergrad for 2 yrs.
What are my chances of getting into AUC? Should I take another semester of postbacc to break into the 3.0 GPA range...for better chances? Thanks

From what I know, all undergraduate courses are included in the GPA. This is just based on personal experience as I don't know if they publish anything regarding this on the website. Here are the statistics off the AUC website:

"American University of the Caribbean requires a minimum of 90 semester credits of college level courses for admission to the School of Medicine. Although a baccalaureate degree is strongly preferred, students who have demonstrated exceptional scholarship may be considered without a baccalaureate degree. College credits must include the following:
  • Biology - One year of Biology, including Laboratory work. Prospective students will benefit by taking courses in one or more of the following: Genetics, Cellular Biology, Developmental Biology, and Comparative Anatomy.
  • General Chemistry - One year of General Chemistry, including Laboratory work.
  • Organic Chemistry - One year of Organic Chemistry, including Laboratory work. Coursework should include both aliphatic and aromatic compounds
  • General Physics - One year of General Physics, including Laboratory work. General introductory coursework should include mechanics, heat, light, sound, electricity, and nuclear radiation.
  • English - One year. Satisfactory written and verbal skills are necessary.
A generous exposure to mathematics, humanities, and social sciences is desired. [Real life experience in the health care field is strongly recommended.]
Additionally, a personal interview may be requested at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. All applicants are required to take the MCAT."(aucmed.edu, 2007)

I'm guessing you could reach an enrollment advisor and speak to them regarding the questions you might have. Hope this helped!

Usually, a post-bacc GPA does not make up for a very bad undergrad GPA. No matter what you did after undergrad, how you did in your pre-med courses is usually very important. It might make a difference depending what you did in post bacc though. Your MCAT is about average though and your post bacc was very good. I would say it's definitely worth it to try. You probably have about a 50/50 chance...maybe a little better.

YOu have hid and disguized your background so it's a tad difficult to give a valid evaluation. 1) You get very little credit for being a class officer, after all, it's just your having fun while politicking. 2) But the business on postBA courses is important. If you took mainly hard science courses with those grades, you will almost certainlly be accepted. If they were soft couirses like psychology, music, or French, they will not be taken too seriously.
3) UCSF is still one of the greatest research institutions in the world and a good letter of recommendation from your PI/ boss even with very mediocre grades will have a positive inflluence on your application.
I hope this is helpful.
