My univesity has a 'grade modification' system, where they apply the grade you get the second time if you fail a class and modify your GPA. Does the medical school just go by the GPA on your transcript or do they calculate their own GPA

I believe that they just use the GPA off of your transcript, unlike AAMCAS who averages all of your grades. You'd have to contact MEAS to know for sure though.

AAMCAS screwed me a lot with that since my GPA is a 3.37 at the moment from undergrad (on transcripts) but was a 2.9 when they calculated it. I failed a couple of classes first year and have done very well since. Unfortuntely, US medical schools don't really care what you've done recently if your GPA is a 2.9.

What are my chances?

First time poster here - thanks in advance for your responses:

Stats:
- 22 MCAT
- Very strong LOR's
- 1+ year of research @ UT-Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas
- 2.8 Business Economics GPA (this was my Undergrad degree...I'm a career changer)
- 3.6 GPA in the sciences (and counting)
- decent amount of volunteer work

I'm re-taking the MCAT to see if I can get a higher score but I'm very interested in AUC should I go to the Caribbean. What are my chances?? I'm applying to start in January of '08

Those stats will probably be accepted, especially if English is a second language. We recognize that in MCATs, students who are ESLs have a great language burden to overcome in order to let their real talents shine.

Your MCAT is a little low...probably below AUC's current average. Science GPA is very good. Any idea what your current cumulative GPA is? You should have a decent chance...not much to lose trying!

Well I called them today after posting the thread. They said my MCAT score was right on average, that the average score is 22 and my age was right along the average.

It was a biiiig relief hearing that. I'm gonna submit the application soon for January 2008.

AUC does not have an age limit for acceptance. At our graduation ceremony 3 weeks ago a student graduated who had had his 50th birthday during his basic science studies two years ago. He matriculated to AUC after a full career as a Marine fighter pilot and then a commercial airline pilot and engineer. He was a great student.

Juardine: if you receive your grades in on time, and do a few phone calls, it is entirely possible to be accepted. But that depends on you and your college administration to beat the deadline for the paperwork. Your grades mentioned are acceptable, but still require a decent MCAT and good letters of recommendation. We take those letters seriously.

I would appreaciate some feed back.
-25 year old.
-BA in history.
-GPA 3.18 and 2.9 sci (I got a D in gen chem during my first year of school, this drop was due some personal/family problems I had at that time. I retook the class and got a B in it, i also had an A in bio1, B in bio 2, C in phys1, A in phys2, B in orgo1 and C in orgo2).
-Worked full time during college as I am an immigrant on my own in USA and had to support myself/pay for college(just got my citizenship this month).
-My MCAT is 26.
-I have fantastic and unique ECs and LORs. I plan on applying for 2008 cycle.

you have a good shot at the 'better' 4 carib schools (ross, auc, sgu, saba) you goa is low for the avg but mcat is above so it evens out just make sur you have a good personal statement and apply to the 4 above.
