just about everyone on here is in debt buddy. i'm not sure that i understand your rambling exactly but yes, take your two years at the CC, then transfer. you will probably need to finish g chem, ochem physics, math bio etc if you want to transfer to a state school as a science major. those are the core courses that you need for med school. premed is a misnomer....find something you like and do well in it.

don't worry about volunteering at this point....get those grades

You should find a premed board, but since you asked....

US medical schools are looking for more than just a few volunteer hours at the local hospital. They want to see "a history of volunteer service". Meaning that you have voluteered when you could, where you could (& with a focus on your eventual career in medicine).

Don't call and ask if people need volunteers. Just go to the place and tell them you want to help. If you go to a school where they have a pre-med advisor, they can help you find the right kinds of volunteer work (I know a lot of people on here have had horrible advisors, but mine was great - probably because I went to a smaller university).

If you are interested in doing any overseas volunteering in Kenya, PM me and I can put you in touch with some people.

Find something meaningful to do. You get very little clinical experience (if any) by volunteering and everyone does it. If possibly, get some training and get a job in healthcare where you can actually interact with patients and get some clinical experience.

And keep in mind, no amount of clinical experience is going to matter if you don't have the grades and the MCAT to be accepted in the first place. First, you have to be qualified. It is only when there are a ton of equally well qualified students, and only a couple spots, that the relevant experience can put you over the top. If you don't believe me...just look at AUC's student body. We have a bunch of PA's, nurses, paramedics, EMT's, etc. who all had far far far far far more experience than most people who were accepted to US med schools and probably had just as good of a chance at succeeding in a US school, but they all wound up here for one reason or another.

What are my Chances...

I’m a recent graduate with a cumulative and science GPA of 3.8, but a score of 18 (5ps,5v,8bs) on the MCAT . I was on a full athletic scholarship while in university, and have done a semester worth of research. I was also a peer tutor for university for a year. Furthermore, I T.A'd for an undergrad bio class as well. I did some volunteer work at dental office for two summers, along with being a coach for a comunity track and field club. What are my chances? Thanks for insight on my situation.

dental office? Wheres your medical experience? 18 on the MCAT? lol that looks like a DAT score... You sure you want to be a doctor, and not a dentist?

Anyways, to answer your question.... Your MCAT will raise some flags... get a higher score on your mcat.. your GPA is pretty good.

I wouldnt be surprised if they took you with that GPA, regardless of the MCAT, but dont quote me on that... If I were on the comittee, i would interview you, and see how dedicated you are to medicine before I even considered accepting you.

re:

Thanks for the reply. I am a Canadian student that studied in Texas so it was hard getting a volenteer job. Moreover, I had no time volenteer while competing for the unversities track team, and studying for classes. When I came back to Canada during the short summers, I tried to find do some volenteering but all the hopsitals required a longer commitment than 2 months. The only places that let me do any volenteer work were the private dental offices. It was better than nothing and It was quite interesting. Never the less, it's not my ultamite goal.

Never heard of people turning down free labor, but ok.

In any case, your MCAT is going to make it difficult to get accepted, even with a high GPA. Not impossible, but difficult. If at all possible, you should do some studying, re-take the MCAT, and go to a canadian or US school!

In a nut shell, I had to drive to seattle and stayed at some shaddy motel near the test center, and someone tried to brake in my room that night. Didn't get much sleep and was wired on caffine. I'm restudying for it right now, and plan to take it Jun 13th here in canada. Should be alot better.

Hello all...looking for an opinion on my chances at AUC.

Basic stats are 3.1 cum science Undergrad (2.8 Lower level/3.5 Upper level coursework), MS with 3.65 GPA, MCAT of 34s...I am a non trad (read OLDER ;-)) with extensive pharma and med school basic research with experience as hospital lab tech and phlebotomist (loooong time ago), minimal volunteer experience, great LORs from current PI's former MS orals board profs, couple of collab pubs, etc...

THE problem is this: (and part of the reason I am being a bit ambiguous with the details of my CV)... I have a couple of DWIs from >10 years ago when I was drinking... I have been sober for >6 years and had no "run ins" with the law for >10 years. How forgiving are Carib schools to past criminal offenses (these were all misdemeanors) if a long track record (>10 years) of change has been demonstrated??

I was completely honest in my AMCAS application, but for US schools the Undergrad gpa is just too low to be considered a viable candidate...throw in the other stuff and it is just not going to happen. I have always wanted to be a physician, have worked in basic and clinical research to stay close to the field, currently work in a medical school, etc. Do I have a chance?

Any personal experience or knowledge of others who may have dealt with an issue such as this(with anonymity of course)?

I fully realize that licensing may be an issue, but I at least want to have an opportunity to demonstrate that I am able to accomplish this...
