FMGs
there has been a rumor on valuemd forums that FMGs will not be able to obtain US residencies in the near future. Seeing as there are so many more residency spots than US grads and a large percentage of US physicians comprising of FMGs, is there any validity to this?

I think this rumor sprang from the idea for US med schools to create more spots to help fill a growing fear that the need for doctors in the future will outstrip the ability to supply them, especially homegrown ones.

I just took this really interesting class: Health Systems Management. In that class we dissected the problem with decreasing numbers of residents and medical graduates in the U.S. It was actually the class that gave me the idea to become a FMG. FWG are actually considered a cost-benefit analysis solution for the demand-production problem facing the U.S. There is also a stigma for doctors that are not Americans coming to America - that sucks - b/c a lot of good doc I know at Tulane are international. Anyway, there is no way they would decrease FMG's b/c AAMC has NOT increased the number of student that are accepted each year so the solutions are: take FMG - be they international or American or increase osteopathic residents - or both.

US Schools
I assure you, when US Schools decide to increase enrollment they are not thinking of solving the long term doctor shortage. What they do see is plenty of US citizens going offshore, and they see dollar bills that they missed their chance on.
The US Dollar, the Yen........Gold, Green.........its all the same. Once you are in residency nobody gives a flying rat's gyro where you went to school. All they want to know is if you are competent, nice, and in it for the right reasons. MedicRN |
