Cafeteria Experience

Hey all. I am an overall fan of AUC and I am happy to be here. I believe that the "powers that be" read this forum from time to time. Maybe this topic has been discussed before....

I enjoy the availability of a cafeteria on campus and the reasonable prices. I think Cherie is pleasant and tries to please the students. What astounds me...is some of the bad attitudes and rudeness of SOME (certainly, not all) of the servers, food preparers, etc. I have witnessed on several occasions sudents who have politely asked for something such as a condiment, wanted to clarify an order, or inquire if there were any more mashed potatoes left and be met with true rudeness and unprofessionalism. I believe that the majority of students are polite and patient with their needs in the cafeteria and I don't believe that is met in kind by the staff.

My thoughts and questions are:

Are these employees not happy in their paid positions?
Do they not have the skills necessary to interact with a variety of people?
Has a former student angered them so much they feel all students are at fault?
Do they not feel appreciated?
Is there something the students can do to imporve the attitudes?

Who knows...I wish it could be different. I can handle the fact that the cafeteria runs out of food early during lunch and does not always offer a great variety of edible options however, what is hard to "stomach" is the rudeness that is placed on a plate and served to the university community on a daily basis.

I want to reiterate that Cherie makes a positive difference and makes the cafeteria experience worthwhile.

Does anyone know what department oversees this area?

Signed,
Disappointed

You are definitely not the first person to observe this behavior in the cafeteria and unlikely the last. I know on several occassions I ordered the ham and cheese sandwich but didn't want the onions and mayo. I can't tell you how many times I had to repeat myself, got definite attitude in response to my request, and how many times the order was wrong. You're definitely right that it's a few workers there, not all of them. However, it seems to be like that all over the island as well as back in the States; some are good at customer service, others aren't so great.

i agree with you. it's not only the cafeteria services as well. it's also the female members of the janitor staff that are rude. i was in "book room" of the library studying alone when one of the cleaning ladies recieves a call and procedes to talk loudly. i asked her to step outside b/c she was loud and she shrugs me away. on the 2nd attempt a few minutes later, i asked her go outside and she goes to the opposite part of the room and STILL talks loudly on the phone. i walked across the room after a few more minutes later and asked her again to talk outside. this time, she just puts a palm out at me. i was completely pissed. i went outside and told the main librarian the situation and the main librarian took care of it.

c'mon... 3 times???

i understand people can be a little rude outside of school. that's understandable. most people on the island assume that auc students are rich kids. however, when some of the islanders are working at school, they should change their attitudes towards us. guess they haven't heard the quote, "when in rome, be like the romans"

Are you suggesting that the local staff then should also get drunk at inappropriate times and start chucking beer bottles at doors and windows? Then racially insulting the upset occupants? Then jump up and down on cars and throw cinder blocks through their windows? Then run through the hallways screaming?

Talking

I guess the moral of the story is that we're all rude and deserve to be locked up in a gym locker while being sprayed down by shaving cream.

After being on the island for a while, I returned to the US and gained a new appreciation for customer service. I was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when the Arby's staff was actually friendly. I went to Superwalmart and actually had the checker smile. I went to the DMV and made it out in less time than I spend inside RBTT bank when I cash a check on the island. I figure it is the culture of the island to be rude.

GIVE ME A BREAK

please don't try to be an apologist for rude behavior by AUC staff (not the profs, we expect and are happy when we pay them to be rude to us).
I am always nice and polite to the cafeteria ladies (im not talking about cherie), and i get downright hostility to what the hell do you want attitude from many of the ppl there. one of the ladies is neutral so I am not talking about her. the cleaning ladies are hostile to non-commital. hardly any are friendly (there are a few). personally i think its ridiculous and idiotic, especially when i try to be polite to them.

the fact of the matter is, some of the students are idiots and immature and better get an attitude adjustment, but others try to make it a point to be polite. the attitude of the staff (not all but a lot of them) is inappropriate, rude, hostile, and personally i don't appreciate it. not that that means anything in the long run, but i would hope they would behave at LEAST in a professional manner. 2 semesters ago, i was minding my own business around 7:40am in one of the lecture halls trying to study for one of my classes, and there were 2 other students there, and this cleaning lady starts yelling as to why the room is dirty and basically almost accusing us. i told her why don't u talk to ur boss to tell the class rep or tell the class rep herself, but of course she just keeps yelling and ranting (this happened 2 days later). is that appropriate behavior, especially when i'm trying to study? and don't forget the memorable UFC-style fight betweeen the 2 cleaning 'ladies' last semeseter.

i would hope the school admin would address the issue, but as usual, i expect nothing from them.
