please don't try to be an apologist for rude behavior by AUC staff (not the profs, we expect and are happy when we pay them to be rude to us).
I am always nice and polite to the cafeteria ladies (im not talking about cherie), and i get downright hostility to what the hell do you want attitude from many of the ppl there. one of the ladies is neutral so I am not talking about her. the cleaning ladies are hostile to non-commital. hardly any are friendly (there are a few). personally i think its ridiculous and idiotic, especially when i try to be polite to them.

the fact of the matter is, some of the students are idiots and immature and better get an attitude adjustment, but others try to make it a point to be polite. the attitude of the staff (not all but a lot of them) is inappropriate, rude, hostile, and personally i don't appreciate it. not that that means anything in the long run, but i would hope they would behave at LEAST in a professional manner. 2 semesters ago, i was minding my own business around 7:40am in one of the lecture halls trying to study for one of my classes, and there were 2 other students there, and this cleaning lady starts yelling as to why the room is dirty and basically almost accusing us. i told her why don't u talk to ur boss to tell the class rep or tell the class rep herself, but of course she just keeps yelling and ranting (this happened 2 days later). is that appropriate behavior, especially when i'm trying to study? and don't forget the memorable UFC-style fight betweeen the 2 cleaning 'ladies' last semeseter.

i would hope the school admin would address the issue, but as usual, i expect nothing from them.

There is a difference between laid-back and rude.

Are we not paying them to be nice? I would support a small tuition increase to pay for more pleasant staff...

I dont understand why some of you are so defensive of the rude and horrible island people... There are good ones, and bad ones. And there are horrible ones. And it seems these work at the school.

one thing i learned about sxm. most of the locals feel that they get paid to just show up to work, however they dont expect to actually work while they are there. when they do actually lift a finger while on the job, they are pissed.

another example..... the "security" guards at neighboring apartments in cupecoy. they are all friends with one another and feel that they get paid to leave their post and go hangout with their buddies in front of the canadian high school and **. after the midnight, its off to the car to sleep only to leave before sunrise. my wife was the property manager for one of the places for our first year (before solutions came into the picture) and confronted the security guy about his "work." needless to say, he gave her an extreme attitude and was rude for the next week while we saw him during the night. after that initial week, he went back to his usual sxm work ethic. we decided not to persue it anymore because we didnt know what he might do to our apartment when we were away on break or out at night.
