Thread: How long in advance should I come to sxm?

Can anyone give me an idea of how long in advance should I come to SXM for the may semester. I would like to get an apartment, and have it set up with the internet and everything before class starts. I realize that sxm is not the US so those things take time, just dont know how much time. I would appreciate any help or personal experiences that people would like to share. Thanx in advance.

May should have TONS of vacant apartments since the current 5th semester class is fairly big(~120 or so <=== correct me if I"m wrong). As for internet, there is no saying how long it takes. I've heard people that got it within 2 weeks and a few within a week. I would say 2-3 weeks is a good time frame to get settled and have a little fun on the island before school starts.

at least 2-3 weeks before school starts is good. the only thing is if you do come early, you will not get a 5th semester's apartment that is leaving since they will be finishing up the semester right before you start your first one. that should not be a prob though. there are plenty of places available. (you will however be able to go to the 5th semester sale, which usually happens in the last two or three weeks of school.) try emailing the housing office for a list for available apts. caribserve, the internet company, usually takes about two weeks max to complete your installation depending on their business. i called the beginning of the semester and had my internet up and running within a week and a half. if you plan or are thinking about staying on campus, you cannot come earlier than maybe a week before the semester starts.

I thought all new students were required to take up the residence in the dorm rooms? Is this now not an option? I got their 4 wks before the start of the semester back in 2000.

I think 1 week can be sufficient in the May class (not Jan, though). Note, CAN, not WILL. Depends on the person, how much you know about the island, if someone is around to help you out, etc.

The dorms are available, but not required for all new students, as there simply isn't space for that.

i am kind of biased since i hate this island so i have taken it to coming back the day class starts, and even then they had to push me off the plane.....seriously 1-2 weeks is plenty of time

Does anyone know whether auc has its own e-mail server, or do i have to use aol or something like that. thanx

I think they are supposed to have campus-wide e-mail now, but after seeing how well the wireless internet works on my laptop in the cafeteria, I'm sticking with my Hotmail.

Isn't the President of SGA in the class that leaves in May? She was one of the people who talked to us about the honor society. She said there were 90 left from her class (think she said original class size was 160) that made to 5th semester. I know there are a few in my class ready to jump on the May Auto Sale.
