    MEIO: The Horror won't end!!!!

After having read many posts, I became a little concerned about something. Apparently, MEIO gives you some sort of notification that your file has been submitted for review when everything is complete. I had received no indication of this other than an assurance by my counselor that everything in my file was complete. So, I called just to assure myself that my file had been sent to review as I was told. Here is what I got:

    "What was your name again?"

"Are you sure that I am your admissions counselor? I don't see your file here"

"Oh, let me check. Your application is being processed"

Then, I interject: YOU TOLD ME LAST WEEK THAT MY APPLICATION WOULD BE SUBMITTED BY FRIDAY AND THAT YOU WERE WRITING THE FINAL PARAGRAPH BEFORE SENDING IT OFF.

Then, I get MEIO's great customer service response. "I didn't say that."

Now, it's official. From my experience, MEIO even surpasses Ross's infamous New Jersey office in incompetency.

I really don't know if there is anything else that I can do except apply to SABA. I have been getting the run around for several weeks now. My deposit for Ross is coming do and I don't want to spend that type of money for nothing.

    A test

Think of it as a test to see how you do under pressure.

Just to let you all know. It seems to be a persistent problem with MEIO. You either have a good experience or a bad one. Had a friend with a 14 on the MCAT and a 3.2 GPA who was accepted in 3.5 weeks. Me on the other hand, I will spare the details, had a 26 MCAT a 3.47 GPA, and it took me six and a half months to get an answer and then I also had to have an interview before I was accepted. Go figure.

Maybe Buss Lightyear, Dr. G is correct in saying that it is a test.

Good luck, sit back, relax (yeah right) and quaff some brew.

    conditional acceptance

It really chaps me that MEIO has been issuing conditional acceptances when they told me repeatedly that I would not receive an acceptance, unconditional, conditional, or otherwise... until I had COMPLETED all pre requisites. I only had to finish O-Chem... ONE class. Does each admissions counselor just make up their own rules or something? This is completely unfair and has been keeping me on a bed of pins and needles for almost a whole year. And the whole persistance thing... believe me... I've been persistent in my contact with MEIO. Rubbish it is... rubbish.

    Hmmm

I hate to get high and mighty on yall, especially since it is impossible to judge character over short email blurbs- BUT I had numerous problems with MEIO too, and worked through them patiently. It didn't take anywhere NEAR the amount of patience, problem solving, and personal skills as I needed in providing direct patient care. Considering the real world challenges and frustrations that are bound to come with a medical career (ie dealing with a variety of demanding situations/ beauracracies ) if you can't navigate through the MEIO 'system'... maybe, just maybe, you are not ready for the very real school of hard knocks that awaits beyond AUC.

But if you're just blowing a little steam- I feel that. More power to you!

    Ridiculous

I find it absolutely RIDICULOUS that you guys are spending your time comparing being jerked around by MEIO and patient care. I'm sorry to say that this the biggest waste of time thread that I have yet read on ValueMD. These two things have NOTHING in common. Defending MEIO's lack of professionalism, organization and respect by saying that it is a test of your resolve baffles me.

In a previous life, I taught Physiology at a state university. I have been told by many that I had an incredible amount of patience and devotion to my students. By the same token, if I go to the grocery store and have to wait in line for an hour because the clerk is chatting and doing her nails, then I get impatient really quickly. Patience is very often CONTEXTUAL and saying that my lack of patience in the grocery line indicates that I would be an impatient teacher or doctor is crap.

The bottom line is that MEIO jerks some people around in an unacceptable manner. I do not like how they handled my application and this doesn't make me a "bad" candidate to be a physician. Instead of defending MEIO you should be getting on their case. It's so unfortunate that such a great school has its image tarnished in this way.

I'll end this rant by saying that *IF* this is intentional and supported by AUC in order to test resolve, I'd rather go somewhere else.

I'm surprised that no AUC official has had the time or courage to come on this forum and respond to this.

Just my opinion, take it or leave it.

First of all don't be sorry for ranting and raving. That is what this place is for. And you are probably right that there shouldn't be a comparrison with patient care and MEIO. However, just because this process gets you upset doesn't mean that someone else would get upset at all. They might just figure that's the way it is and be patient. If you were applying for med school in the states for fall of 04 you wouldn't even have an answer yet. They typically do not get their answers until late February through April.
That said, it does suck that MEIO is jerking you around. I visisted AUC last May and met with all the professors on the admissions committee. Then when I started to have some major problems with the admissions process I contacted two of the Prof's on the Committee and told them what was happening. One went straight to the Dean of Basic Sciences, Thurmon(sp) and said that everything was going to change, the other one I contacted wrote me back a response to my cordial Hello email but when I told that person what was going on they never responded once to any more of my emails. Everything I explained was explained in a professional manner and not rude.
So there you go one told me everything was going to be taken care of the other never responded back. Once this happend they switched my admissions officer to one that appeared to have everything together. And I was finally accepted on Dec. 18th after six and a half months of waiting.
So my point for telling you this is, is that I tried to get things changed and I think that one of the Profs on the committee looked at me as a trouble maker and made me have to then go through an Interview. I have a 3.47 GPA, 3.68 sciences, 26 MCAT, eleven years critical care medical experience, and eight gleaming letters of recommendations six from highly respected physicians and two from my medical committee PhD's here at my school. Did having all this make the admissions process easier for me? Freak no!! It sucks, it sucks it sucks!!! But what could I do? I said my peace and I was still given the run around.
Maybe AUC and MEIO feels that if you are applying to their school you must not be able to get into an American school so, therefore, they can do what they please to you. It doesn't make it right its just the way it is.

    I'm out!

    Agree.

The point I was trying to make in my previous post is that it is ridiculous to equate your ability to put up with MEIO and your abilit to provide excellent patient care. I see absolutely no logic in equating the two, except maybe a feeble attempt to legitimize MEIO's incompetence.

Secondly, as you know AUC & other Caribbean schools cater to the non-traditional student. Many of these prospective student are giving up their current jobs, selling their houses, having their spouse quit their job, uprooting their children from school, friends and family in order to better their lives. It is completely understandable for them to get upset when some careless admissions clerk, loses their transcripts and/or LORs, *several* times or when they say different things every time you speak to them...etc... That is why I take great exception when people say that if you get upset in this situation, you're probably not able to deliver quality patient care. Hell, why not say that if you dislike Brocoli you'll be a lousy physician!

    reply

I am now getting worried. I was told my appication was complete, so I took it at face value. Are all the counselors the same, or are some better than others? Please let me know because mine seemed very nice and organized. Hope this is not a problem
