It was also shown on the CBS Early Show this morning. It was quite sad because they were interviewing the one guy who is now out of the hospital. Half of his head is shaved with a huge line of stitches across it. They also interviewed the mother of the other guy who is still in intensive care and she was beyond upset with the lack of police response. I just think it's so sad for them, but I hope that this shows the island and the rest of the world that this is a real problem. We've got the world listening now!

Maybe we should email them some of the other stories that have been happening here and then the police would have to start doing something if they still want tourist and students to come here.
Jamie Just a thought....

Friendly Island ????? Ya right!!
This island never fails to amaze me. It is unbelievable how much crime takes place here and they still have the audacity to call it the "Friendly Island". Come on!!! Who are they kidding ??????
I am so happy that news of this crime is making it to the US Press - it's about time this island suffers from a decline in tourism. Maybe then the local government will begin to take SERIOUS measures to improve saftey for the island's ONLY SOURCE OF INCOME: TOURISTS!!! Let's be honest here ... if it wasn't for tourism, this island would be NOTHING. It boggles my mind how little the locals appreciate that fact. Not only are they rude and ungrateful, but they also participate in so many violent attacks on tourists and medical students! The ONLY REASON that this incident is making news in the States is b/c the victims are two high profile CBS employees. If they weren't, then it is highly likely that this crime would have been swept under the rug by the apathetic and corrupt police department just like all the other incidents that they are "investigating". The only thing the cops do properly here is write ticket citations for not having proper license plates so they can suck more money out of visitors instead of ensuring their safety. I CANNOT WAIT to get the heck off of this island! Hopefully it will be in once piece!!! Anybody who asks me about this island will get an honest answer: YOU ARE NOT SAFE ONE BIT!! |

I remember 1st day of class they say "Oh, be sure when you go the store, to greet the person at the register with a smile and a "Hello, how are you?" I still do this to this day, and 95% of the time I get a blank stare in return.

That is terrible, but not supprising to me. I've heard of several such incidents. I think it's pretty much universally known that you can't be openly gay in the Caribbean without fearing for your life. Not that the people are evil, but homosexuality is not accepted in their culture......much worse than in the US. Some (not all) people take it too far and think that it's ok to hurt another person because they disagree with the way they live their life, thus you have situations such as this. It's a shame.
