yeah, I asked the same question.. and got the same reply. I almost thought finding a way to get on that network but I realized it was my last 1.5 weeks on the island...

kinda makes you wonder why they dont just keep everyone on that network........ although there is probably a reason that the higher ups at auc dont surf the web on kaplan test day.

Kind of another question along the same lines, are there other places near campus that have good internet connections?

How fast are home DSL or Cable lines usually? I'd really like to have access to the internet from someplace. I heard that Phillipsburg is putting up a wireless network all along the Boardwalk, is there anything similar going on elsewhere on the island?

Expect anything internet related and free public access on the island to be slow. No way will it be like your local town library or barnes and nobles hot spots.

IF you want "fast" internet, you will have to get on the new caribserve service. You can get up to 800 some kb/sec. (school usually runs at 1-12 kb/sec) Everything else sucks... $400 for the equipment and anywhere from 50 to 90 for the service, depending on how fast you want. The best thing to do is come down with a router and plan on sharing with surrounding apartments if you live by students.

Thanks for the advice.

Is the $400 dollars refundable, or can I sell the equipment to someone else after leaving at a discount as used? Or is it just lost money.

Caribserve, IDL.. ugh. Both suck. IDL on average I can get faster speeds.. sometimes over 200kb/s but it's consistency is horrible. Caribserve barely ever goes down but I can barely get 10kb/s

Well, upgrade your eqpt at Caribserver and get the 256/768 service! You'll download at around 40-50k/s... that's what I was getting.

Did you live in the same complex as SOE, by chance? I get the 512k service and it consistantly runs at that speed. But, yeah, it's not hard to believe that it doesn't work as well somewhere else on the island. Inconsistant service seems to be a theme here.

Anyways, to the above poster. You do own your equipment and can sell it when you leave. I think it's the best option.
