California approval?

A contributor to the SGU forum (Stephew) was discussing California licensure. Stephew speaks highly of the residents from the Caribbean that have worked with him/her at hospitals in California he/she did say that there are schools in the Caribbean that are not approved by California.

Stephew writes, “California is one of the states that do not trust ECFMG's ability to evaluate foreign medical education. They do their own individual evaluations of IMG's.”, and,” Currently only SGU, AUC, and Ross are approved from the Caribbean.”

I am a Californian and would like to be able to return to California to practice medicine should I choose to do so. I am a hopelessly addicted SCUBA diver and am planning on studying in the Caribbean. However, I do not want to limit my ability to practice medicine in my home state.

I see that **** ***** is the president of AUA. I have read that he was heavily involved with getting ROSS its California approval. Is AUA currently working on its California approval? If so what is the time line for its approval?

Thanks,

Tyson

Arrow California

Most likely AUA will apply for California within next years, due to the experience of the SMU failure....

The Ca board seems to give great importance to establishment and the way the school is run. In my opinion AUA will be approved with no problems, but you should go to an approved school before the board receives the application and processes it.

If you fail at AUC, SGU, or Ross why not transfer to SMU, if you fail at SMU, why not try another SMU.

true. There are a lot of schools out there. Come to AUA for a great education, but if cali is a must for you don't come yet.

Our president was involved in getting Cali approval for Ross and was consultant to Saba during their accreditation process. But AUA will not apply for a few years.

We have our NY site visit in 23 days, and I think that's our big focus now.

duuhhhh, this was already discussed !!

What Sree said are pure facts . The University has professionals in the administration that are experienced and superb, just like the faculty. _____________________________

the fact is, that as of now AUA has no approval. no matter how good the students think the school is, and no matter who the admin are, and no matter what the plans are, the fact that is pertinent is that it is all SPECULATION.

AUA may be a great bet when it gets the approvals. it may be a fine school now. but, if you are a potential student, it is a very large risk to attend a school on what may be. go to a school that already has what you need. there are plenty of them.

to put it in some perspective, saba had been open sine 1989 and only applied to cali last year....smu had said it was in process since 1998, had to move campus and was denied last year. this doesn't mean the schools are bad....just gives you perspective on the lenght of time it takes to get it done.

if you are a cali student DON'T go to an an unapproved school, there is no telling when, if, or wether an approveal would be retrospective.

I recommended searching for the threads with the AUA official and Pat Park (California Gov't representative), funny stuff really if it wasn't so so so sad.
