Manipal academy plans medical college in the UAE

MUMBAI: The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) is cementing its position as the education brand with the most international affiliations in the country. After establishing its presence in Dubai, Muscat, Malaysia and Nepal, the group is now entering Ras al Khaima in the UAE, and the US.

After two years of negotiations, Manipal will finalise a deal to begin a five-year medical degree college in Ras al Khaima next week. The project, which is being supported by the King of Ras al Khaima and a Dubai-based company, will use Manipal's expertise in the area of medical education. The group will provide the curriculum, ensure quality control and examine the possibility of a joint degree. "We hope to have the campus ready by the next academic year in '06 and take in 100-150 students initially," said Ranjan Pai, CEO, Manipal Education and Medical Group International India.

The Ras al Khaima General Hospital will be given to the college to use for the clinical part of the course. Manipal has already set up the Melaka-Manipal Medical College in Malaysia, which took in its first batch in 1997. The government of Malaysia and Malaysian Medical Council recognises the MBBS degree of Melaka Manipal Medical College, which is conferred by MAHE, a deemed university in India.

In addition, the Kasturba Medical College, a part of MAHE, is beginning a twinning programme this September with the American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine. With 40-50 students expected in the first batch, Manipal hopes to ramp up these numbers to about 150 next year. Students will spend the first two years of the programme in Manipal and the following two years in New York state. AUA will confer the final degree.
