Thread: Skype Interview Questions?

Hey guys! I applied for Feb. 2012 admission and I have a skype interview next week. I'm a bit worried though since this is my first interview via skype, so I was wondering if any of you had this type of interview and know what specific questions were asked? Thanks in advance!

Do a search for 'interview questions' on the AUA page on VMD. You'll find a dozen posts with questions people were asked that will give you a feel for the tenor of the interview. Good luck.

Another thing that may help--If you aren't familiar with skype, make sure you set up your account and practice using it so you know what to expect. I don't know how AUA does it, but you can do it with or without webcam.. There can also be some lag time, so a trial run would be well worth it so there's no surprises.. just a thought, as I have done skype interviews for jobs in the past.

has anyone ever just flown to New York for their interview? i know that it is obviously more expensive then free skype, but i feel that i would do better in person. it's just a curious thought i have.

All Skype interviews will be done with a webcam. Do not forget to dress professionally, it is held to the same standard as an in-person interview.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to post some of the questions I was asked during my skype interview to help out anyone who is preparing for it.


1. The interviewer asked me a few questions pertaining to my personal statement and resume. So make sure you review these materials.

2. If you have any discrepancies on your transcript(s), you’ll be asked to explain them. I had some personal issues, so I talked about how that affected my academic record. Try not to use your problems as an excuse, but instead explain that you had a bump in the road and that it has made you into a stronger person and that you are capable of taking on the challenges of medical school. In other words, always try to turn a negative in to a postive...sorry for the cheesiness, lol.

3. What have you been doing since you graduated from college? Talk about your work, volunteer, travel, etc.

4. If you don't mind telling me, did you take the mcat? How many times? What was your highest score? Did you improve the second time around? If so, how did you study for it differently that may have helped you improve your score? Since AUA doesn't require the mcat, you don’t have to answer these questions unless you achieved a high score and think it may help your application.

5. Do you have severe test anxiety? How do you deal with stress in general?

6. Did you apply to any other medical schools? Were you accepted to any of them?

7. If you aren’t accepted directly in to the md program at AUA, would you consider attending the Basic Science Enhancement Program or go to one of the other schools you were accepted to? I said I would take it into consideration, so we’ll see. The interviewer said this is just a general question, and is not made to scare anyone, lol.

8. Do you have friends in medical school, residency or that are practicing physicians? If so, what have they told you about the medical field?

9. Briefly tell me what made you decide to become a doctor? Be honest!

10. If you found out that your patient has a terminal illness, how would you go about telling them about their diagnosis?

11. What does compassionate mean and what does empathetic mean?

12. If you had a good roommate (that you had no previous problems with) and you caught them cheating on an exam, what would you do?

13. What are some examples of ethical issues in the medical field? I brought up stem cell research, abortion and euthanasia. So make sure you are familiar with these topics.

14. If you were a practicing physician and your colleague asked you to cover for them because they made a mistake, what would you do? Talk about integrity and know a little something about malpractice.

15. Do you know about the current health care reform in the US? Read about O’s health care reform plan. I'm so glad I prepared for this because I would have been caught off gaurd otherwise, lol.

16. Why should we choose you over the other applicants? Be honest and concise.

17. Make sure you have several questions for the interviewer.


I hope this was helpful! Also as a suggestion, do a mock interview with a friend, especially if you are not familiar with skype. Just be confident, honest and overall, just be yourself and you should be fine . I will update this post if I remember anything else. Good luck!
