    Via Caribarena.com article:

Antigua, St John’s- The government has reacted to what it described as an “unauthored misleading article” in The Daily Observer on Wednesday about the American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine.

The article, which quoted Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Edson Joseph and an unnamed close to the National Accreditation Board of Antigua & Barbuda (ABNAB), alleged that graduates, including locals, were ineligible to practice in Antigua, as the institution has not been accredited.
The source questioned the circumstances of a charter supposedly granted by the government.

The government issued a rebuttal, expressing its “grave concern” over the contents of the piece, and clarified as follows:
The American University of Antigua operates under the laws of Antigua and Barbuda pursuant to its Charter which was issued by the Government in 2003, and subsequently revalidated in 2004.
By the Charter, the Government has recognized and continues to recognize the New York State Board as a duly authorized accrediting body which has accredited the American University of Antigua, College of Medicine.

The American University of Antigua (AUA) is operating with the full confidence and support of the Government; and graduates of the College of Medicine continue to be eligible for licensure in Antigua and Barbuda.

Wait... what is the ny boards authority on quality assurance of education in Antigua?....... that doesn't make any sense......

I think we need to contact NYMB and let them know of this new revelation.... because they cannot grant any charter support.

If the nations med board doesn't grant support and is of course not doing quality assurance visits as it seems like here.... this is a squatter school!

    Government issues statement refuting article

Government Issues Statement on American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine Accreditation

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – March 2, 2011……….The Government of Antigua and Barbuda wishes to express its grave concern over an unauthored misleading article which appeared in The Daily Observer of Wednesday March 02, 2011 in relation to American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine. The Government therefore wishes to advise as follows:

The American University of Antigua operates under the laws of Antigua and Barbuda pursuant to its Charter which was issued by the Government in 2003, and subsequently revalidated in 2004.

By the Charter, the Government has recognized and continues to recognize the New York State Board as a duly authorized accrediting body which has accredited the American University of Antigua, College of Medicine.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Accreditation Act, 2006 was enacted in July 2006 and made operative in November 2008 with the appointment of a Board and an Executive Director. Among its functions, the Board is authorized to register institutions of education, and to consider their applications for accreditation for recommendation to the Minister of Education. The Board is currently in the process of registering these institutions, and has begun developing acceptable criteria or standards in respect of accreditation.

The American University of Antigua (AUA) is operating with the full confidence and support of the Government; and graduates of the College of Medicine continue to be eligible for licensure in Antigua and Barbuda. (Ends)

The NYMB is not granting anything. The govt of Antigua/Barbuda decided they wanted to approve any school that NYMB does. This isn't saying they ask the NYMB to approve or deny schools for them. It's similar to the "cali list" that states don't want to do the leg work on their own so if recognized by cali they will recognize as well. Nothing wrong or shady here.

So as per last poster, the national medical board leaves quality assurance to another organization?
