Thread: Family Practice I/Internal Medicine I-Fall 2010: Who else is going to Miami?

Hi Everybody,

My name is Amit and I am going to be going to Miami this fall for the Family Practice I-Internal Medicine. I wanted to see who else is going to be there in Miami since I dont know if i am really going to know anyone at the site. I have a pretty good idea about the area, as far as where classes are and where the hospital is so if there are any questions anyone has i would enjoy starting a dialog. I for one am really excited to finally know my site and am ready to get everything lined up for September.

Yeah, I am talking about 5th semester in miami. They used to call it the Thinc Program last year. From what i understand the schedule is as follows:

Miami
September 3rd Clinical Orientation
September 4th Registration 9:00 to 4:00pm
September 7th First Day of Classes
October 22nd Comprehensive Shelf
December 17th ICM
December 20th Comprehensive Shelf
December 22nd end of semester

Of course you dont need to take the 2nd Comprehensive exam if you passed it already or when we have it October, so the semester can end on December 17th if you play you cards right. Class is only a couple times a week at the center for Haitian studies (8260 N.E. 2nd Avenue/Miami, FL 33138) and pretty much everyone will have clinics at North shore Medical Center (1100 N W 95TH ST/MIAMI, FL 33150).

I just got my placement this morning, so i am curios as to all who will be over there this fall, and what everyone is thinking about.

P.S. I know everyone is wanting to enjoy the summer, but dont forget about the books, Step 1 comes up real quick after this semester.

They might have changed the schedule, but when i was there for the jan-april semester, we had class 5 days a week (some folks had it on Sat's also). You'll also have hospital anywhere from 1-4 days a week (depending on where you're at. ER is an overnight shift for 12 hours, surgery is 4 days for 8 hours a day scheduled, etc and you rotate every week.) Also, if you don't have all of your immunizations, paperwork, etc, you won't go to the hospital. I know the group who didn't (probably 15 of the 45 students initally) went with a fam practice md who did nursing homes 3 days a week. Hospital is much better IMO. So make sure all your paperwork is UTD and ready on the day of registration.

hopefully they changed things but when i went to Miami, they didn't give out A's...yeup that means 15 credits of either a B or C - you can tell i'm still bitter about this.

if you keep up with your studying during 5th, it'll make it that much easier when you finish 5th to buckle down. don't forget to enjoy Miami while you're there...esp now with Lebron

There was definitely a problem with 5th semester's grading when I was there. In Miami we were being tested on subjects taught in Baltimore and graded based on their criteria even though the experiences were completely different. There's basically no chance of getting an A, so 15 credits is averaged into your clinical grade effectively dropping your GPA. So students were starting REAL clinical rotations with a B or a C, even though they were getting A's in all their rotations.
