I'm also starting in May 2008. Have you applied for your loan yet? I was told by my student coordinator not to worry and to apply in early to mid Feb. I have been successful getting a few of the books on-line already.

My wife and I will be moving down to the island in mid-April most likely.

I am going to start buying books soon may be early April. Personally I have not started applying for loans yet and will start looking into it towards the end of January.

My student coordinator also told me to apply in mid Feb which I hope is going to work out coz I have heard some horrible stories of how students were not getting their financial aid worked out and everything.

I was hoping to bring my Fiancee to AUA but I thought it was not going to work. I heard it was not easy for people to get jobs and plus I do not want the locals to be teasing or behaving bad with my dear lady. She is not going to be very helpful on my educational endeavors at AUA.

Best of luck to you.

I heard similar things about loans but was re-assured by my new student coordinator not to worry. I guess I have no choice but to take her word for it until I actually apply. We have good credit so I'm not that nervous.

I've found the books at very resonable rates on amazon as well as the site half.com.

Regarding your finance, it's true that it's hard to find work on the island. They have a law stating that a non-native must have significant documentation from the employer that a native Antiguan couldn't perform the same job in order to hire a foreigner. I have heard that some people have had luck bar tending under the table and that sort of thing but it's not garunteed and they usually bounce around so that customs never catches them. Doesn't sound that appealing. My wife is actually going to try and work on-line remotely. We'll see. Worse case scenario she has a year and a half off living on a Caribbean island!

Thats pretty funny. I was just thinking that I might pick up a weekend night here and there slinging drinks. Worked my way all through college and the past few years on the side boozing up America - might as well put the islanders on that list too.

You guys should apply early with your loans. There's so much stuff you have to send the companies and all, i.e. current pay stubs, driver's license copy, I think the my med invest requires a utility bill too. When you're applying with either College Loan Corporation or My Med Invest, put the school down as Kasturba, and the location as NY. If you go with CLC, do it early cause they mail the check directly to you. I'm not sure about with my med invest.

Talking

Just curious, what's the benefit of putting down Kasturba and NY? I have a scheduled call with my student coordinator next Monday (last week of January) where she is going to help guide me threw the process and I'll have to ask her.

Also, I've read mixed things on buying or renting a car on the island. I see that some students are trying to sell them from time to time. Have any of your student coordinators mentioned a good place to buy or rent one from? I don't know a ton about cars and don't want to get stuck with a lemon so I'll probably lean towards renting for the 16 months on the island but want to find a legitimate place. Anyone else planning on getting a car?
