Hey Bourne,

I'm originally from Houston, Texas but I live in Vancouver now! I'm checking out loan options now from RBC (booo! co-signer), VanCity, Nat Bank, etc.....

For anyone and everyone else....

Interview with Ms. B****** T**** went well this morning at about 10:30. She made me feel super comfortable and did not make it seem like a firing squad. It lasted about 40 minutes and very nicely ended with a joke.

Here's the run down of what was asked:

1) Why AUA / Why the Caribbean? Did you apply to any other schools? What's the status on those?
2) Why do you want to become a doctor?
3) Take me through your undergrad years....grades, MCAT, etc..
4) Do you think you can handle MD1? Based on your past....
5) Any issues with living on Antigua for 2 years? What does your family say about your decision? Do they support you?
6) Give your opinion on the state of the US healthcare system? Notice anything different in Canada?
7) How'd you (if you don't mind me asking) end up in Canada?
8) Please state any weaknesses you feel you have.
9) Tell me a little about your volunteer experiences in Canada.
10) Do you feel that medicine has any controversial topics right now? If so, do you have a stance on any of them? (I talked about cloning and stem cell research since it's coming up for the presidential debates)

"Do you have any questions for me?"

CA Approvals - "Coming in the near future... no time line as of yet since it takes so long to get on the list"

Hospital Integration - "First and only Caribbean medical school to integrate basic science students in a hospital from the first year"

She told me to call her personally if I had any other questions that I couldn't think of this time. I was told to possibly hear something within a week, but no more than 2 weeks either by a phone call or email.

The clock starts ticking now.......

Has anyone been originally put into the extended program, but managed to fight into the regular program? I just got put into the extended program for Aug 2008, but I really feel that I can handle the basic load. Any suggestions?

Talking

PRT, that's a great attitude to have. I feel you on hating those types of tests. Part of what I do here in Boston involves teaching a first year elective to med students at the hospital I work at and it blows my mind sometimes who got in. Someone that can probably split the atom and aced the MCAT but is unable to look you in the eye while they're talking! They also get 10,000+ applicants for 110 spots. It would be impossible to get the best qualified applicants without having a basic system to score everyone even though some people unfortunatly slip between the cracks. And I agree, it's great that AUA is there to afford us the opportunity to continue moving forward and working hard.

EMDU, congradulations on having a good interview. Let us know when you hear back from them. It shouldn't be that long. I've heard some people say they hear back in a couple days, some in a couple weeks but nothing longer than that.

Looking forward to getting down to the island and getting this party started!

The Admissions Committee rarely will change a student's placement after they have rendered a decision. ONLY if the student has some updated information not submitted with the original application file (info in the file at the time of interview and submitted to the Admissions Committee) will we consider sending the file to them again to revisit the student's placement.

Give us/me a call if you want...See below.

Hey Doc, I'm a current 1st semester student and I'm in the extended basic science program and I like. I can mainly focus all my time on anatomy and what little is necessary on DPS. If the school put you in the extended program then it was probably for a reason. You can always just stick with it and take histology during the block. And since you're coming in the fall, you'll have time to take histology and go home for the holidays I believe.

Hey Shay (or anyone else),

What is the "Extended Sciences Program" all about? Is it similar to Ross' Merp Program? Is it just an extra semester to prep you for MD1? Sorry if my question answers itself, but I just didn't know for sure....

Thanks again....

Extended basic science program means that you take Anatomy and DPS. You take Histology either during the first block after your 1st semester or during 2nd semester. If you take it during second semester of course, you'll be one class short and I guess you just let an extra class over lap to the point where you'll be taking 1 or 2 classes during a 5th semester here on the island.
