Hi,

I'm also taking pre-med 1, and I heard lot of students saying that to buy the books from states itself as they are cheaper in states. But I would be buying it later, after I get my loan money.

Semester I

This is the list I compiled from the various posts as it was all getting messy. Any other additional information would be appreciated as well if there is anything I'm missing. I wrote what students thought of the book in red.

SEMESTER I

Doctor, Patients, and Society
  • Student Workbook to Accompany Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination 5th Ed. / Seidel – Required (not necessary)
  • Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination 5th Ed. / Seidel – Required (not necessary)
Gross Anatomy/Embryology
  • Essentials of Clinical Anatomy / Moore - Required (Must)
  • Atlas of Human Anatomy with CD-ROM 3rd Ed. / Netter - Required (Must)
  • Grant's Dissector / Required (not necessary)
  • Benchmarks / Colborn - Required (use for 1st exam, use BRS after)
  • Langman's Medical Embryology 9th Ed / Sadler - Required (Supposedly Langman is writing embryo questions for Step 1, but not needed during semester)
  • Imaging Atlas of Human Anatomy 3rd Ed. / Weir and Abrahams - Suggested (Highly recommended)
Histology/Cell Biology
  • Histology, A Text and Atlas 4th Ed. / Ross and Kaye - Required (Must)
  • USMLE Road Map Histology 4th Ed. / White – Required (not necessary : although you may need outside info for Step 1)
OTHER MUSTS
  • BRS Gross anatomy by Kyung Chung
  • BRS Embryology
RECOMMENDED
  • Anatomy Flash Cards
  • Embryology / Larson
  • High Yield Histology
OTHER INFORMATION
  • For DPS, you will mainly only need Stethoscope, White Coat, and Formal Attire(Dress shirt and tie)
  • You can only buy Benchmarks / Coleman in schools taught by the Professor
  • Reminder: You may need another book for outside information for Histology other than Ross for the shelf exams / step 1.
  • For Anatomy: Review photo atlases of real dissections
  • Most of all, pay attention and take good class notes as the notes will be pivotal for the exams. (Lecture notes may be sufficient enough for Embryology)

i liked HY the most for embryo because it's concise and covers pretty much everything you need to know for Step 1 - I also used HY for anatomy and neuro

for the course itself, i dont know if HY alone will be sufficient. when i took anatomy, i actually read langman. dont know what current students do nowadays

Don't know what a Greenbook rotation is? Click here.
Preliminary list of state licensing requirements here.
If you have a question, post it at the AUA forum. I can't respond to PMs due to Step 2 coming up very soon.

would it be safe to just buy the BRS for anatomy and embryo in the states and just buy the rest of my 1st sem books when I get to the island? Except for the BRS books, how good is the bookstore on the island? Can I get Langman's and moore's books over there. I read somewhere that the bookstore is pretty good yet they are always out of BRS books, so thats why Ill bring those from the states. Id rather get to the island talk to some people and get a feel for what books are good for me. Is this a bad idea? Money is not an issue. Thanks guys

Thanks for the advice Sree. Congrats on being Super Moderator! Would you happen to remember what region you began with in anatomy, or did the course go by systems.

Some books are cheaper/same price at the store as compared to online...If you plan on going to Borders, here's a 20% off coupon:

Visit Borders

Hope it helps someone...

On the booklist, they say Histology, A Text and Atlas 4th Ed. \ Ross and Kaye \ Required \ ISBN 0781750563 is required...now there is a 5th ed...is it worth getting for about $20 or so more?

EDIT: N/M...Already got it.

Based on this list I got everything recommended for about $252 and some change.

back and thorax is usually the first chapter. the first lesson back when i was on the island was the vertebrae, followed by "muscles of the back"
