Important information from ecfmg that impacts you

SUBJECT: IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM ECFMG THAT IMPACTS YOU

    Dear Doctor:

ECFMG records indicate that you are a student or graduate of one of the following schools in Saint Lucia:

    - American International Medical University School of Medicine
    - Atlantic University School of Medicine
    - College of Medicine and Health Sciences; Saint Lucia
    - International American University College of Medicine
    - Washington Medical Sciences Institute

and you have not yet obtained ECFMG Certification.

For students/graduates of a medical school to be eligible to apply to ECFMG for ECFMG Certification, ECFMG must have, among other things, confirmation from the appropriate ministry in the medical school's host country that: (1) the medical school is recognized as a medical school by the ministry; and (2) that graduates from that medical school are eligible to be licensed to practice medicine in the medical school's host country.

ECFMG has been advised by the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development of Saint Lucia ("Ministry") that graduates of your medical school are not currently eligible for medical licensure in Saint Lucia. We are advised by the Ministry that one of the reasons why your school's graduates are not eligible for medical licensure in Saint Lucia is that your school is not currently accredited by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP).

Therefore, effective today, ECFMG's Sponsor Note in the World Directory for your medical school has been updated to reflect that 2018 and later graduates of your medical school are no longer eligible to apply to ECFMG for ECFMG Certification or to register for USMLE examinations as a step toward ECFMG Certification.

    **************************************************

    WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

Current Students Who Expect to Graduate after January 1, 2018 or Later:

As of January 1, 2018, students and graduates of this medical school are no longer eligible for ECFMG Certification or to register for USMLE examinations as a step toward ECFMG Certification.

In order to remain eligible for ECFMG Certification (or to register for the USMLE examinations as a step toward ECFMG Certification) after January 1, 2018, your school would need to be confirmed by the Ministry as being able to have graduates practice medicine in St. Lucia, or you must transfer to and/or be officially enrolled in a medical school that is listed in the World Directory as meeting the eligibility requirements for its students and graduates to apply to ECFMG for ECFMG Certification and to register for USMLE examination. In addition, the "Graduation Years" in the ECFMG note on the Sponsor Notes tab of the World Directory listing for the medical school must be listed as "Current."

If you are registered for a USMLE examination with an eligibility period that extends into 2018 and you take the examination in 2018, you must be enrolled in a medical school as described above. If you are not officially enrolled in a medical school whose students and graduates are eligible for ECFMG Certification as described above, and you take the USMLE examination, this may be considered irregular behavior.

If you have questions if the school you are transferring to is eligible for ECFMG Certification or for you to be able to register for USMLE examinations as a step toward ECFMG Certification, please contact us at (215) 386 - 5900.

    2017 and Earlier Graduates:

If you graduated in 2017 or earlier, you will continue to remain eligible to apply to ECFMG for ECFMG Certification.

    **************************************************

Your medical school has also been advised of this information.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact an Applicant Information Services Advisor at (215) 386-5900 or info@ecfmg.org.

    Sincerely,

    ECFMG

Any update on this? Did schools listed in the letter work with ECFMG and Ministry to resolve this issue?
