    AAIMS: The Real Truth

There are many on here who seek to sully the reputation of Aaims; some are disgruntled former employees, some embittered former students. The administration has chosen to abstain from responding to the barrage of diatribes written about them on this forum; they have chosen to take the high road and not dignify the unfounded rants of the school's many detractors. As a current student, however, I can't help but to take these insults personally, because to attack the institution of Aaims is to likewise discredit all who receive their education there. To be fair, it is true that in the beginning there were many challenges; administrative hiccups abounded as AAIMS was finding its footing. However, the majority of those issues have been corrected and I have personally seen vast improvements since the school's inception nearly 4 years ago.

There has been much talk about AAIMS not having clinical rotations. That is a blatant and malicious lie: there are rotations available in Jamaica (at Maypen and Mandeville Hospital) and there are rotations available in the U.S. in the District of Columbia and Atlanta, Georgia, among other states. Those of us who have passed our USMLE exam have all been smoothly transitioned into clinical rotations in our preferred location of choice.

The quality of the clinical rotations has been beyond satisfactory. Admittedly, we had to quickly rise to the occasion, as the transition to clinical rotations can be quite intense; however, we were all able to do so without issue. Most of our professors during basic sciences and now during clinical rotations at Maypen hospital were UWI trained and are UWI affiliated lecturers. It must be said that we are combined with cohorts of UWI students for these rotations and are able to hold our own among them. I must also point out that they too frequently complain about administrative errors and clerical oversights, despite UWIs solid and enduring reputation.

I also noted the lamentations of students complaining that they had to do independent study to prepare for the USMLE exam; I am not sure why this is even mentionable. At every learning institution in the world students must do self study in order to prepare for their coursework. Why should AAIMS be singled out for something that is a well established and well accepted aspect of medical school curriculum and tertiary level academia in general? Furthermore, students are given 4 months of Kaplan online or live courses to aid in preparation for the exam; we are not simply left alone to flounder without guidance or instruction.

It should also be pointed out that AAIMS has a functional clinic that sees real patients from the local community and gives students hands on clinical experience beginning during their first year. It has also begun a program of introducing USMLE formatted clinical vignettes to students in the POM/PBL courses, so that students are familiar with the question types early on. AAIMS has also recruited several full time professors, who are readily accessible and available to assist students with their studies. These are all things that were not present at the school's inception, but have been put in place as the school continues to establish itself.

I have no agenda to promote when it comes to AAIMS, but I do think credit must be given when it is due. I try as best I can to be a just and impartial person, and to examine situations contextually. AAIMS is a relatively new school and every new school will experience its fair share of glitches and trials and errors during it's infancy. I have witnessed the institution improve and grow in leaps and bounds, and I now wear their symbol like a badge of honor on my white coat at the hospital. As I am a busy student, I do not have the time or opportunity to frequent this site and rebutt the slew of criticisms that I anticipate will come in response to this post, but if ever there was an objective and honest account of AAIMS, this is it. I took a leap of faith when I came to AAIMS, and it is one that is working out in my favor. If you talk to most of the school's active students, they will share similar accounts. Do not be deterred by the distasteful and unfavorable reviews of a select few students who spend their time spewing venom about AAIMS; I am very proud of the school AAIMS is becoming, I see the vastness of it's potential and I am look forward to witnessing the promise of its future. That is my truth about AAIMS.

My name is ******** JOHNSON. How could you not work that out?

Here are a few things that AAIMS did not get right and for which they have paid. These things are much more important than my name

1-The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing! The Admin failed in this regard
2 Respect people's feelings. Even if it doesn't mean anything to you, it could mean everything to them. Hence the truth has been told on behalf of those who were mistreated
3 Be careful with your words. Once they are said, they can only be forgiven, nor forgotten……….as has been well illustrated on VMD.
4 Everyone you meet has something to teach you. Try to listen and learn. Don’t worry about my name. Fix the tings above Or are you untethered from the truth?

MY QUESTION TO YOU IS THIS
HOW MANY AAIMS STUDENTS HAVE PASSED USMLE 1 IN FOUR YEARS?

    IS IT STILL FOUR?

THIS IS A GOOD IDEA OF HOW GOOD MEDICAL EDUCATION IS AT AAIMS

A man is in bed with his wife when there is a rat-a-tat-tat on the door. He rolls over and looks at his clock, and it's half past three in the morning. "I'm not getting out of bed at this time," he thinks, and rolls over.

Then, a louder knock follows. "Aren't you going to answer that?" says his wife.

So he drags himself out of bed and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is a... man standing at the door. It didn't take the homeowner long to realize the man was drunk.

"Hi there," slurs the stranger. "Can you give me a push??"

"No, get lost. It's half past three. I was in bed," says the man and he slams the door. He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened.

She says, "That wasn't very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the baby-sitter and you had to knock on that man's house to get us started again? What would have happened if he'd told us to get lost??"

"But the guy was drunk," says the husband.

"It doesn't matter," says the wife. "He needs our help and it would be the right thing to help him."

So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts "Hey, do you still want a push??"

And he hears a voice cry out, "Yeah, please."

So, still being unable to see the stranger he shouts, "Where are you?"

The drunk replies, "Over here, on the swing---- "
