AGU (American Global University Medical School) in Belieze --has anyone heard of it?
I am interested in a couple of quesitons about this school
1. its financial situation 2. in what states do its graduates qualify for residency 3. are all of its core rotations green book (ACGME) accredited 4. any other info positive or negative much appreciated. (ie: do people think its one of those scams or a real viable school) I am more interested in info concerning 3rd and 4th years and especially residency any replies much appreciated. follow this forum for a few years, and you would agree with us. belize doesn't have the best track record (ha, and i go to a school in belize). when i was in school my first semester, Grace University (more like Grace Shack) shut down. St Lukes closed down a year later, and right now MUA-Belize is bitting the dust.
AGU ????? why, go to a more established school. chances are GOOD that it will not be around by the time you finish your 4 years. chances are GOOD that SGU/Ross/AUC/Saba/St Matts will be by the time you finish. please take it from some of us who have seen many a school close down in the last few years. |

Hm doesn't sound terribly encouraging. Do you know whether there is a way of checking up on their financial situation (ie: like a consumer report type of forum or via some agency?) My only reason for wanting to go there is that I am a 3rd year student who has already completed most of his 3rd year rotations and this school will hopefully take most of my credits. Another question that I have is: what happens if say you graduate from a school and it closes down like a month after you have graduated and before you have found a residency? Is your diploma still valid. Are you still eligible to apply to residencies and take step 3. Can you get licensed?
Another scenario: if say I go there and the school closes down when I am in the middle of my 4th yaar. What happens then. Can I transfer the credits? Also, if you don't mind revealing this info, what school are you in? You seem like someone who knows what's going on, I thank you ahead of time for your reply. Quote:

I think you are totally right, but many of the higher schools want me to do a semester on the Island repeating some of the basic science stuff... and there is no way in hell I want to do that after almost finishing 3rd year of med school. Of course if Ross will take me... I will go there, but with my situation I am afraid that ross won't take me. (I failed a 3rd year clerkship). Thus I am trying to figure out how much trouble I will be in if I go to one of these 3rd tier schools.

important question for you... have you taken and passed step 1? if so, they should not require you to do ANY basic sciences, it might even be illegal for them to require that, if i understand the law correctly.
and getting back to your earlier questions, you can definately get burned if a school closes down at any of these points. for example, say you graduate, you have your diploma in your hands, it doesn't mean a hill of beans if the residency program you match at requires your school to verify important info (i.e., transcripts, clerkships, etc). you cannot verify this info, the school must do it. then you must verify all your info with FCVS (federal credentials verification service, you can google it), and that is a US office that will hold all foreign documents, so that if your school closes down while you are in residency, you can still get a permanent license. 48/50 states accept it, and many now require this service. better to go to a school where you don't have to worry about this Last edited by wcb22 : 11-04-2007 at 11:19 PM. |
