New York

Clarifying, New York visit and approves schools is for clinical training and I think residency, not for licensure.

Anyone can correct me providing the correct reference.

Neither of which have anythying to do with quality of the school or wether you can eventually be licensed...the school is basically saying we sent a letter verifying our address.

the only states in the US that look at foreign schools are California, Florida, New York and various others use thier lists of approved schools.

If you get an ECFMG certificate, pass the boards, and complete a residency program, the vast majority of states will license you. I don't know anything about AGU, but I'm sure that when they have graduates, those graduates will get residencies and will get licensed.

What you need from a medical school is good instruction and a chance to sit for the USMLE. Almost any caribbean school will give you that.

it is a bit more complicated than that. some states have lists of approved schools, other states use those lists, some have rotation requirements either in time or type (acgme vs FP umbrella), one state counts time in rotations differently so you may end up having to do more rotations after you graduate, there are pass attempt limits on the usmle, some will license you after board certification others will never license you depedning on school.. basically there are 50 different state requirements most of the time they overlap and if you are ok in one then you are ok in 30 others but you can't mislead people by saying as long as you have the usmle and an ecfmg cert you will be licensed.... tell that to my undergrad biology TA, MD usmle, ecfmg cert in hand on his third year trying for a training permit, not even a permanent license.

you have to research and be very careful about the school you chose

Beware of these Caribbean med schools .......

I have spent 10 years working in the Caribbean and Central America .... I have enough experience there working in TERTIARY level hospitals and also in district hospitals..... I have come across several Med schools mushrooming everywhere .... the people who start these med schools have one common goal - SCAM the unsuspecting student ...I know for sure that even the ROSS med school which is famous out in USA is virtually unknown out there ...these schools are like club houses no infrastruture no faculties you are on you own ... tell me if they even get to see patients ... they are not even given registration to practice medicine in those islands where you study!!!! the local people do want to be victims to such scamming med schools ..they are not guinea pigs !!!! even the Med schools in BELIZE are a bigger scam ... those schools do not even have a sign post to tell you where it is ... also these med schools are unheard of in BELIZE where the population is under 500,000 ....I did meet one of the Dean for BELIZE MEDICAL COLLEGE ... their entire curriculum is a joke .... they do not have any big campus or faculties ... there are no hospitals attached to them ... no kind of clinical training .... even the preclinical faculty is just on paper most are employed in private practice and would show up only when there is an Inspection or if the question of the validity of school arises .... my sincere advice to all those going to the Caribbean med schools is that please think carefully .... you have to choose what you want .... Medical profession and studies are useful only when you get into a good med school which has atleast 50 years of solid reputation and when you get your degree you are confident to handle patients individually .... if you just care about USMLE then my advise is that you join a med school which is reputed and take up KAPLAN prep courses if you need them .... med school degree is much more than just being in the list ECFMG uses ....
If you are really keen then go for quality ... the only Caribbean school that is worth its weight is UNIVERSITY OF WEST INDIES med school- JAMAICA ... it is a very good med school , ECFMG listed , also the degree is recognised in the UNITED KINGDOM and one can apply for UK registration right away after you graduate from there - that is what is called Quality .. I doubt if any medical school in the Carribean can match the University of West Indies med school in Jamaica .... If anybody disagrees they can post me I am open for discussion ...

A god has spoken

..."Medical profession and studies are useful only when you get into a good med school which has atleast 50 years of solid reputation and when you get your degree you are confident to handle patients individually"

You say that as if was a proven fact. And unfortunately...you are very, very, very WRONG.

Let me debunk you a little bit....

Why don't you go ahead and tell that to the thousands, literally speaking, of excellent medical doctors that Ross, SGU and AUC has in the U.S.A.

You will be surprised as to how many are out there. There are several other examples of medical schools, much younger than 50 years that have excellent doctors practicing.

I dont not dispute the fact that there are a lot of bad medical schools out there, but to generally categorize EVERYTHING less than 50 years as sub-par is plain and simply, and pardon my bluntness...Ignorant.

Max

Uwi

The UWI started in Jamaica in 1948 with the Medical School.

The UWI also has another full Medical School in Trinidad which was started in the late 80's

The UWI has as one of its centers for clinical training the QEH in Barbados.

The UWI is well recognized worldwide with thopusands of its graduates in good positions in USA & Canada.

The UWI graduates are eligible for licensure in all 50 states in the USA.

Places in the UWI medical schools are generally limited to West Indians from the 14 countries that contribute to the UWI.

I generally regard it as blasphemy when the UWI is mentioned in this forum and compared with offshore schools.

UWI graduate 79 class
