AMSA Convention 2008 updates!

hey..i just wanted to let everyone know that the AMSA Convention was definately a success!...myself and another AMSA exec both attended the convention representing All Saints...we met with other med school students representing their schools both from the International chapters and the US chapters...it was actually pretty cool getting to speak to students from all over the world about their experiences and how their progress is coming along regrading med...as a Caribbean student (hopefully other Caribbean students will read this), i found that we have an amazing platform to represent both our schools and more importantly ourselves as responsible medical students and i would encourage every AMSA member (and if ure not a member..JOIN!) from their respective chapter to make sure to get involved either locally, on the national level, or just come and attend the convention....im not sure if many ppl know this, but International students can run for many positions on the AMSA National committee's and boards and i think it would be a great oppurtunity for anyone interested in getting further involved in the organization and maybe even help spruce up their CV....

among the International delegates, 2 positions were up in the election process and the current International Trustee is from IUHS and the Associate is from SGU...other students from schools like Ross, Ben Gurion, All Saints (us...), Tel Aviv, and more attended, voted, and even ran for positions...sooo there is definately room for more international schools to get their voice heard and represent more than just their local chapters...

other events that we attended were casting clinics, hearing loss 101 (a clinic to learn how to deal with deaf and hard of hearing pts), USMLE prep seminars, AMSA rally down the streets of Houston, keynote speakers from all walks of life in and out of the field of medicine, Katrina relief seminars, and much much more....also we snuck in some time and checked out the local rodeo going on...

all in all it was a great trip that we both appreciated alot and definately learned alot too...we met some great ppl from US and International schols, our school supported us, our AMSA council supported us, and we are definately gonna make it out to convention 2009 and we really hope to see more students from all over there tooo!..

sorry for the long post but if anyone was interested in any more info on the convention or how to get involved from All Saints or from any university really...jus message me or post and ill try and reply the best i can..

congrats on making it there..conventions are great!

as a side note just make sure that the organization you join one that agrees with your views. amsa is basically a political loby which is fine and dandy but it does not represent the interests of medical students as a whole and certainly not the interests of us as foreign medical students because it favors socialized medicine and has taken positions against foreign medical graduates. joining as a foreign chapter is basically worthless in the grand scheme of things because we have no voting rights on any important things but they sure do like our money.

search through this site for links proving the above. again if you agree with the views of amsa then go for it..everyone has a right to join and advnace any of their views..amsa however tries to hide some of their agenda and i think misleads students to joining. specially us foreign students who are basically begging to join anything that links us to medicine back home.

look before you join

AMSA Convention

hey...I was the other exec. member who advocate is referring to. Definitely have to agree with everything he posted. I just wanted to add that I know there is a lot of tension between students of different schools especially in the Caribbean, and i'm not going to step in the middle of everything and hope to stop it...but I think the AMSA chapters from these schools should at least get together for the common goals that AMSA stands for. Being part of AMSA already shows that you are different from the rest of the students in that you care for your medical education and have genuine interest in medicine. Having met some of the execs. from other Caribbean schools, there seems to be a shared sense of direction in which AMSA wants to move. Hopefully other med students can catch on and actually help to achieve something great for the Caribbean med population.

And in response to the previous post...this year one of the resolutions that was voted on dealt with the restructuring of national AMSA; including giving the International Trustee a seat and a vote on the National AMSA council. So contrary to popular belief, we as foreign medical graduates do have a say in what AMSA stands for and we can steer it in the direction we want.
