Less people apply.
Also, I have heard that you may do some part of the 6 years in the usa?? Would this be the internado year (5th yr which would be good to catch up to the U.S. standards of doing things) and the 6 th year social service in an underserved latino population?
Yes, that is true that some of the curriculum can be completed in the US. However, it's really only the additional curriculum beyond the 4 years of med school that one can realistically plan on completing in the US. The first 3 years are to be completed in Guadalajara as an absolute. Then, there is some way to do rotations for the 4th year in the US. However, according to the UAG website in the past, the students with the highest GPAs were the only ones offered the opportunity. The top 4 are offered rotations at NYMC, and then there is some way for others to secure rotations at other places in the US. However, they say that you still have to come back and complete exams at the UAG. So, it's really debatable as to whether it's even worth it.
The fifth year has always been the 'internado' year, and it has always been done in the US, through the fifth pathway program. This intern program is said to remain open as an option for completing the 'internado' year. The sixth year is also rumored to be available in the US in a latino community, with permission from the school. However, if you do that year in the states, the rumor is that you won't be able to practice in Mexico, so it's debatable as why that's worth it either. If I'm doing six years, I at least want the Mexican MD after all that, not something with restrictions.
Or can some of the other rotations be arranged in the U.S.? I would be interested in doing some rotations in the U.S. just to get adjusted to the differences in doing things and to get letters of rec for the Match. Does anyone know how to go about this, I mean do you just go ahead and contact medical schools and ask them if you could do rotations with their students???? And does anyone know of anyone who has done this?????
Well, the intern year in the US would probably be enough for US experience. I'm not sure how the clinical spots for the fourth year are secured though.
Much of this is still up in the air though. There may be some changes to the program and routes to licensure coming up here soon, so stay tuned.
