Although I didn’t graduate from AUG, I find myself in a similar situation, in that I attend a Mexican school and after my year of internship I migrated to Europe taking advantage of my dual citizenship, after becoming license and working for 5 year in EU I came back to America, since I’ve passed step 1 and 2 but have been told by the ECFMG that I still have to complete the year of social service to meet certification requirement.
It hasn’t been easy, but I’m making all arrangements necessary to comply.
But truth I have issues with that requirement, both agaist the ECFMG and the Mexican authorities.
From the ECGMG perspective I don’t see why they enforce the requirement, they claim that is because you must hold an unrestrictive license, truth is that American and most if not all European graduate of Med school have restricted license upon graduation. They still have to complete a residency to be eligible to practice.
IMHO from the Mexican authorities prospective it makes no sense to require foreigners to complete a year of social service given that there isn’t a debt acquire by them. Thrust is that the USA has been outsourcing part of its Medical education via international medical student and will continue to for the foreseeable future giving that some estimate that because of poor planning there is about 30 % shortfall in the amount medical schools to meet the future demands.
The US Government prefers foreign graduates to come from non offshore school that have been created with pure lucrative purpose. Hence, this could be a great source of extra funds for legitimate Mexican school like AUG and my school UNE.
I think the AUG and other Mexican school should lobby the Mexican government to abolish that requirement, truth is there wouldn’t probably as many medical schools in the Caribbean if it wasn’t for the added requirement in Mexico.
