I have turned to many a Peurto Rican during a lecture and asked what the professor said and they look at me like, "was he speaking spanish that time."

Americans have it easy if you develope an ear for accents while in undergrad. We all have had many a professor or TA in the states with a thick Russian/German/Mandarin/Indian accent. You just get used to listening for ques in what they say.
