The school is in Cupecoy (although to call it a town is a bit misleading, it's more like a collection of resorts and apartment buildings). Anything in Cupecoy would be within walking distance. Any of the other locations would require a vehicle, but there are some great places to be had away from campus. Rent is generally quite expensive in Cupecoy, and goes down the farther away from the school you go.

As for groceries, there is a tiny grocery store in Cupecoy that is VERY expensive, a slightly less expensive one in Maho (near the airport), a fairly expensive one in Simpson Bay, and an even slightly less expensive one in Cole Bay/Phillipsburg.

Saftey has been discussed before, so do do a search. However St. Maarten might look like Paradise, you have to conduct your life as if you're living in a major city. Be street smart, and you'll most likely be ok. That being said, there have been break-ins, car thefts, muggings, etc. in many of these areas. Keep stuff locked up, don't go out alone at night, don't flash money/expensive items around, and in some places, try and look like a tourist. Crime on St. Maarten tends to be directed toward locals (and as a student, you are a local).
