Yes, clean underwear is fairly important.

Groceries are a bit more expensive than in the US (greens and fruits though are really marked up, cost/benefit ratio had me loading up on steaks than salad), though not prohibitvely so. With the loans you're taking out, as long as you're not the type of go clubbing every weekend and buying seris of shots and drinks at bars, and hitting the PR, you'll have more than enough money.

Though you could just spend $9 at the Thai place, get a lot of pad thai and that'll last you for the day.
