2007 is a great year for International Medical Grads (IMGs) in Canada.
this is the first year that there are parallel and competitive match streams for international medical graduates (IMGs) in all provinces except Alberta*. in the past, severe restrictions limited the match to only graduates from English-speaking Canada. French was only added in 2006.
this year, IMGs and Canadians match at the same time in Manitoba and Québec, competing head-to-head in the first round in a similar fashion as the US matching program. IMGs have a separate (parallel) stream of postions in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia in the first round and compete with Canadian grads in the second round.
IMGs have a separate (parallel) stream of positions in both the first and second rounds in Ontario.
check the
CaRMS website for more info.
PS: Canada's first round matches one day before the USA.
EDIT: and to answer your original post question... if you have 99% board exams and
only want to match in Canada, then just don't rank any schools in the US. simple. : )
[*according to the
CaRMS website, it doesn’t look like IMGs are able to apply for a residency spot in Alberta at all.]
