Beware of these Caribbean med schools .......
I have spent 10 years working in the Caribbean and Central America .... I have enough experience there working in TERTIARY level hospitals and also in district hospitals..... I have come across several Med schools mushrooming everywhere .... the people who start these med schools have one common goal - SCAM the unsuspecting student ...I know for sure that even the ROSS med school which is famous out in USA is virtually unknown out there ...these schools are like club houses no infrastruture no faculties you are on you own ... tell me if they even get to see patients ... they are not even given registration to practice medicine in those islands where you study!!!! the local people do want to be victims to such scamming med schools ..they are not guinea pigs !!!! even the Med schools in BELIZE are a bigger scam ... those schools do not even have a sign post to tell you where it is ... also these med schools are unheard of in BELIZE where the population is under 500,000 ....I did meet one of the Dean for BELIZE MEDICAL COLLEGE ... their entire curriculum is a joke .... they do not have any big campus or faculties ... there are no hospitals attached to them ... no kind of clinical training .... even the preclinical faculty is just on paper most are employed in private practice and would show up only when there is an Inspection or if the question of the validity of school arises .... my sincere advice to all those going to the Caribbean med schools is that please think carefully .... you have to choose what you want .... Medical profession and studies are useful only when you get into a good med school which has atleast 50 years of solid reputation and when you get your degree you are confident to handle patients individually .... if you just care about USMLE then my advise is that you join a med school which is reputed and take up KAPLAN prep courses if you need them .... med school degree is much more than just being in the list ECFMG uses ....
If you are really keen then go for quality ... the only Caribbean school that is worth its weight is UNIVERSITY OF WEST INDIES med school- JAMAICA ... it is a very good med school , ECFMG listed , also the degree is recognised in the UNITED KINGDOM and one can apply for UK registration right away after you graduate from there - that is what is called Quality .. I doubt if any medical school in the Carribean can match the University of West Indies med school in Jamaica .... If anybody disagrees they can post me I am open for discussion ...
