Med School encounters housing problems

**** *****, the president of the American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine has said that there is insufficient housing for its students.
Yesterday, the university welcomed its most recent batch of about 100 students to its campus at Jasmine Court on Friars Hill Road.
Asked to comment on one of the difficulties of running the university in Antigua, the president pinpointed the lack of sufficient housing.
“Our biggest problem is we need additional housing. The one thing that the school needs to have in terms of recruiting students is more housing for our students. We are going to build and we are also encouraging the community to build.”

The need for additional housing is pressing for the institute. “We are one of the fastest growing schools in the Caribbean. We started with nine students and we now have over 400 students.”
Comparing its growth rate to other institutions, ***** said, “We have been open for less than three years and have 400 students. Some colleges have been open for more than 10 years and don’t have 150 students.”
“We think that we will have, if things continue to progress as well as they have, over 1000 students within two years in Antigua,” ***** said.
With the projected growth of the student body, the need for housing may become even more problematic.
***** stated that the government has been clear about the people of Antigua receiving direct benefit, as well as indirect benefit from the presence of the university.
“So we are committed to not building all the housing for our students, but to (integrating) our people in the community. And it is being done.”
***** said that currently the Sandpiper and Anchorage hotels house some of its students year round at special rates.
