Student from CAHSU
Central America Health Sciences University (CAHSU), Belize Medical College, Belize.
I am a current student studying at CAHSU. I took transfer from one of the Caribbean school. I visited most of all the Caribbean medical schools, I will say only few have high academic standard. CAHSU has excelled in academics and other facilities. I am happy with how the university is going and the vision and future plans of the dean.
Before my acceptance to CAHSU, I talked to the Dean, the admission officer & I personally visited their campus in Belize.
All I can say is wow, it’s excellent. I never heard the name of CAHSU on valuemd or any other forums so often so I was a bit worried to attend this school. But after seeing the school personally I was surprised with the facilities, academics, and the student population. A student population of 90 in basic science.
The campus
Its very big campus, with 3 hexagonal buildings and a new one coming up. It will occupy the auditorium, more labs and a gymnasium.
They have a swimming pool, Football ground & a basketball court on campus. The campus is full of gardens and greenery around. It's a proper campus and not like other caribbean school which are running in small buildings or shopping complexes.
Facilities
All classrooms are fully equipped with audio-visual aids, comfortable desks and chairs etc.
Micro and histology lab. Anatomy lab with cadavers, Bones sets etc.
The Library is huge with thousands of books and journals and a computer access room. The library is one of the best which I have not seen in most other Caribbean medical schools. A student lounge with pool table, TT table etc.
Wireless internet network in the campus.
Faculty
When I visited the university, I sat in few classes. Some of the faculty members are excellent and others ok not so bad with every other school the same thing.
All the faculty members are MDs and they don’t teach multiple subjects. Every subject has a lecturer. Overall they are great lecturers.
They are very helpful and available all the time.
Curriculum
Different from other Caribbean school, in a way it’s good. As you study system wise. You study Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Radiology in basic sciences. So when you go for clinical everything is repeated and in a way it’s the best. From 3rd trimester onwards we go to hospital rounds & whatever is taught in class, the practical part is done in hospital. So you get to see many patients in basic sciences.
Kaplan USMLE step1 training in 5th trimester.
Clinical rotations are of 88 weeks duration.
Housing
The university arranges housing for students which is few miles away from the campus in a housing society. It’s secured and fully protected by round the clock security.
An apartment comes with fully furnished 2-3 bedrooms, a hall, Kitchen and toilets. Rooms are furnished with T.V, Refrigerator, washing machine etc.
Free transportation is provided by the university from housing to campus, for shopping and sightseeing or student tours.
Why should you come to CAHSU? Positive aspects.
