Wow, I'll definately keep that in mind!
More established airlines are usually good with that (what you mentioned with AA)
And also, for flying in general, keep an eye out for "overbooked flights", and consider volunteering your seat if you get the chance and have the time!
My mom, brother, and I, were on our way back from Taiwan, and were on a layover in Osaka, Japan. The Northwest flight to New York we were on was overbooked, and by volunteering our seats up, we each got a $400 check, and (but) were put on a flight 30 minutes later that flew us first class from Osaka to Honolulu to Los Angeles to Washington Dulles to Binghamton. Long flights, but I think that will be one of the few times in my life where I am able to fly first class! (and make $400 in a matter of a few hours for sleeping and eating):P
